Living like this wasn't any fun. Not anymore. It wasn't the way he'd really wanted his 'time' to be. Because let's face it, who does? Right? Who actually wants their 'time' in this existence to be as it is? Zach couldn't name a single person. Everyone wanted to change something.. their emotions, their lifestyles, hell, some even changed the way they look. But, as humble and meek as it may sound to him, he wanted something a great deal larger than a new perspective. A different life. Completely and utterly. The ultimate change. In fact, you could say he hated his life.

"Come on you stupid bastard!" He growled mercilessly at his makeshift toaster. The tiny strips were glowing, but they were too hot.. he kept burning his bread. And God damned if he wasn't getting toast today. Sheets of metal lay around his feet, cowering at the might of this mighty inventor. Yes, of course they were. They looked up at him as their God, their creator. The smell of ashen wheat filled the air around him, only making him hungrier. He could easily have had a salted leg of pork, or a spicy potato masterpiece. But he wanted toast.

He sat hunched over his toaster fiddling at it with a screwdriver. A silver, chipped one, if it made any difference. Only a single lamp was placed on his table. It was dark. Too dark. He smiled at his own creative humour. Dotted around him his other 'inventions' sat quietly on their roughtly hewn wooden shelves, waiting for the next member of their tin family. Failures. All of them. The phantom light cast across them only more sinister, especially effective due to the odd shaping of them. He flicked his toaster. "If you don't cook something properly soon, Sita is gonna be pissed at me." He mumbled under his genius breath. "Just look at all this wasted bread." He glanced up for just a second and a wide grin spread across his lips. He stared at a poster he'd designed. In big, bold, black letters;

"If you look at this ONE more time, you've lost it. Go see a doctor."

He tore into a piece of bread with his teeth. Uncooked, because it made all the difference.

Sasha bounced down the old, cracked walkway from home, holding her mother's hand. 'Mamamamama!' she screeched, and Sita laughed softly. Corey would be so proud. Mm, Corey... A soft whimper escaped Sita's lips, and she bit the bottom one. Sashalyn had never gotten to meet her father. Really, she doubted the young girl knew that she was meant to have one. Words ran though Sita's head.

I hurt...

She looked to the sky, remembering what she'd always believed, that being apart made the heart grow fonder, and that she was still under the same sky as Corey, even when they were apart. She had had to believe that, because when they were younger, they weren't allowed out after dark, and she had missed him so. It was just the same, right? No, it wasn't. Was he even still alive? She didn't know.

I miss you...

Everything was so fucked up. She didn't know where to begin, or what to say. People changed, sure, but a life lived alone just wasn't the same. Of course, she wasn't alone. She had Sasha, and her clan. But would anyone ever replace Corey? Of course not. Nobody could ever replace the love of her life. But she couldn't go on like this. Picking her head up, she tried on a smile, and Sasha smiled back, thinking it was for her. But it wasn't, not really. It was for new beginnings.

I think it's over now.

They made it to Zach's house in no time flat. She knocked. Zach, you there? she asked through the door. It was time to start over.

He heard a voice in the recesses of his mind.. well, behind him, but what kind of genius lives in this world all the time, eh? He was pretty sure Einstein and Newton had their only little worlds where they sat and thought about how damn smart they were.

Swivelling round on his creaky chair, he darted up and flicked a lightswitch hidden away behind a stack of paper's, piled way above his head. God help him if they ever fell over. "Ah, Miss Sita. How nice of you to visit me when I am at work." His accent was heavily British. Sometimes he put on posh, southern-eastern accent, like the 'gentlemen' used to talk. It all added to his character, really. Whatever that was. He liked to think people liked him. "And little Sasha. Have you come for another mechanical puppet? I heard you broke the last one I gave you. I'm afraid they do not come with built in concrete protection." The lightbulb buzzed incessantly in the background, like a tiny bee buzzing behind his eyes. The smell of burnt bread slowly siphoned away through the open door, and Zach's friendly-gone stalker smile remained. "So, Sita, what can I do for you today? Something special, I hope." His eyes gleamed with the excitement of a child. Or that of a man who liked building things. Pick one.

Sasha giggled, and Sita lifted her up and set her on her hip.Well, I do believe we've come only for a visit, although I'd like to say that, if you don't mind, I'd like a piece of that burnt toast. She grinned and picked up a piece, knowing Zach wouldn't refuse her. She tended to like things overcooked, as she was sure he must have noticed by now. 'Aiyi, toes!' Sasha screeched and took a bite from her mother's piece. Sasha wasn't fluent on the speaking thing, and she often mistook words. Sweet baby girl, Sita laughed, That's TOAST. With a 't'. Sasha frowned at her mother. 'No tea...' she said grumpily, and Sita grinned at Zach.

On second thought, alphabet blocks might be good.

If you've ever reached one of those times where one descision can change your whole life, this was definately one of them. Halfway between being happy that Sita was annoyed about all the bread he'd wasted, he felt a itching, prodding sensation to slap the bread from her hand and stamp on it, screaming, "No, you can't eat that, it's wrong!". But, of course, in the real world, that doesn't happen. Zach didn't slap it from her hand, in fact he grinned sheepishly when Sasha took a bite. Strange as it seemed, although he never admitted it to himself, he saw Sasha like a daughter, the one girl he'd give anything to protect.

He knelt down and brushed a few strands of hair from Sasha's face gently, smiling proudly at her, still with the itch and prod, but it was recessing now. "Alphabet blocks? You're mother thinks alphabet blocks would be a better toy for you today. But, what if I told you that instead of just boring, normal ones, I could make you a brand new set of talking blocks! Huh, what about that?" The accent facade dropped completely when he talked to her. He looked up at Sita and let the grin fade a little, as if to say, "Yes, THESE will be concrete proof, because I'll be damned if you're kid breaks another one of my inventions." Ok, maybe he didn't quite think/say the latter sentence, but he would have done.. yeah, he would have done.

The lightbulb dimmed and with a pathetic tinker of a filament on glass, gave up. "Oh God damn."

Yay.

Sita grinned and set Sasha down. The little girl grabbed another slice of burnt bread and toddled off to look at Zach's latest inventions. Sita leaned against the door, not wanting to sit down without permission. So, Zach, how have you been? She paused, then laughed. I see the toaster is still a little hot and horny. Sita was a tease, she knew, but she couldn't help it. It was just how she was.

If you know what I mean.

Watching Sasha play with his work was toturous. "Sasha, dear.. uhm.." He knew what she was like, just like every child. Breaking something was no big deal, they just moved on to the next thing until they broke that. "Please.. no.. uh." Ha. Now he thought about it, that mentality followed through maturity and old age. Mess one thing up, move on. He imagined thats why Corey had left. Sita had never told him exactly why, but it left his imagination running wild, which, wasnt really an imagination; Well thought out scenarios, direct to the last detail, that haven't happened yet. That was a better way of putting it.

He'd given up trying to stop Sasha and left her to her own devices. Jesus, children were the only thing that could drive an Atheist to pray, and he found himself praying. With somewhat of a nervous laugh he turned his attention to Sita and smiled wryly. "It seems bread isnt the only thing burning around here." The accent had made its return, and quickly his T's were pulled back from the language void and were pronounced once more. She enjoyed teasing him, he knew she did. As a self-taught professional psychologist, however, he knew every reason she teased him. At least, thats how he saw it, he'd never taken a psyche lesson his entire life.

He busied himself with fumbling the lightbulb out the socket, rummaging for a new one and replacing it. The work of a moment, eh?

"And from the darkness, came forth light. And he was pleased." Ahh, nothing beats a good God complex.
