Why do you care
Summary: This story starts during “The Clamor and the Clangor”— what if the reverend never interrupted their conversation

Disclaimer: I do not own these characters. Always remember ASP is the true Genius, I’m just borrowing it for a short time

Author’s Note: I felt that this episode was never resolved. The fight was forgotten and I always thought that was a big mistake. So, here is my attempt to tell another side of the JJ story. All the parts in italics are the characters thoughts…..

Why do you Care?

Lorelai knew she was stepping over the boundary, but she had to know. She didn’t get it. If Luke had really moved in with his, his wife (why does that sound like a bad word?) then why was all his stuff still in his old apartment. She was fighting with him over stupid stuff again. She didn’t want to fight with Luke. She just wanted her friend back. Were they even friends?

“You're passing judgment on my relationship with Nicole,” screamed Luke.
        “I'm not passing judgment.”
“You passed judgment on our marriage, you passed judgment on our divorce and now you're passing judgment on our living together.” Well duh because this whole relationship is just wrong.
“I'm not passing judgment on you living together. You're passing judgment on you living together… by not living together.
“You know, I was a little tipsy on that cruise ship, but I don't remember anyone pronouncing us husband and wife and Lorelai.” Why do I have to explain my self to her? Why does she even care?
“Well, they may as well have, because I spend as much time with Nicole as you do.”
There she goes again. Sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong. Why can’t she just back off?
“And the judgment's back!”
“I could move in with you guys. You wouldn't know.” Dumb, dumb Lorelai. You went to far Lorelai.
“You know, none of this is any of your business.”
Lorelai just looked at him. She knew it wasn’t but Luke was her friend and that made this her business.
        “It's absolutely my business.”
“How?” Why is she making me justify my life to her?
“Because! I wasted a week of my life adjusting to the idea that you had moved only to find out that you haven't moved.”
Bullshit! She did nothing! Why did she stay away?
“How much adjusting did you have to do? Nothing's changed! I still see you everyday, I still cook your food, and I still serve your coffee. What do you care?”
That’s the million dollar question my friend. Why do I care? Because he’s my best friend. Not Sookie, not Rory, but him.
“I care.”
“Why?”
Lorelai voice started to crack before she blurted out, “Because I don't want you to move.”
Luke just looked at her. Did she actually care? This was not supposed to be happening?
He needed to know why she was making such a big deal about all this,
“Why? Why don't you want me to move?”
Luke just stood there manning his battle position waiting with a ready retort with whatever answer she was about to give. Lorelai looked into his eyes. God, Luke has blue eyes. Why didn’t I notice that before? Focus Lorelai the man asked you question.
“Because I don’t okay. Are you going to make me explain it?”
        “Yes”
“Fine, I’ll tell you. This whole week has sucked because I’ve been questioning our whole quasi-friendship.”
        “Quasi-friendship?”
“Well, it wasn’t quasi until last week. I thought we were friends and that I wasn’t just an annoying customer that came in everyday. It hurt, okay. Are you happy now?”
Luke just stood there stunned into silence. Lorelai handed him his stupid tool and started to walk out of the church.
        “Where are you going?”
“anywhere but here”
        “Lorelai, wait!”
But, Lorelai didn’t wait she practically ran out of the Church wiping her tears as she went. She was still hungry, but she didn’t care. Man this town could really use a 7-11 or something.
Lorelai ran down the streets of Star’s Hallow with tears streaming down her cheeks. The snow was falling around her and her hands were beginning to feel the chill. Luke left the church and saw the back of her coat as she ran down the street.
“Damn!” Luke muttered to himself. This was not how it was supposed to go. He had to get mad, didn’t he? Jeez, everything was tumbling out of control and he didn’t know what to do. He knew that he needed to talk to her. Luke got in his car and drove towards Lorelai’s house. I need to talk to her. No, I don’t. It’s not about her. Why should I have to explain myself?
Luke was having a battle with himself about what to do next. In the end his pride won and he swung the truck around went back towards the diner.

Lorelai ran into the house and went upstairs and threw herself on the bed. This was all wrong. This was not the way they were supposed to be. She thought that he was her best friend. Actually, he was her best friend. But what am I to him?
She dug her head deeper into the pillow and just lay there. She didn’t want to think about Luke anymore, but she couldn’t help it. He was there like this nagging, flannel clad ghost who just didn’t know when to go away.
“Shut up! I am not judging you,” she screamed.
“That’s good to know,” said a familiar voice.
He was there standing in her doorway with his tool box on the floor next to him. She just looked at him. Her eyes were red and swollen from all the tears.
“You said something about gutters?”
        “Go away!”
“Come on Lorelai. We need to talk”
She sat up in bed; sadness quickly being replaced with anger.
“Oh is that so? What would we talk about? The weather. Well, it’s crappy and bound to get even crappier. There we talked,” snapped Lorelai.
She got up and walked towards the window. She couldn’t look at him.
“Listen, I think we got our wires crossed”
She turned around and glared at him. He has got to be kidding?
“No, I think the wires have actually been untangled. I get it. I’m the pity case; the slightly amusing yet annoying customer. I’m not the friend just the customer. It’s clear now, I’m sorry if I confused things. There the wires are uncrossed now.”
        “Hey!”
“What!”
“You are my friend,” Luke said softly. I’m sorry I hurt you, but welcome to the club.
“Ha!”
        “It’s true”
“I wasn’t judging you or your relationship,” said Lorelai as she turned back towards the window.
        “Yeah, you were”
“No, I wasn’t. I just don’t understand. I went away and my best friend came back and got married, then divorced, and the moved away.”
        “Best friend?”
“You’re coffee isn’t that good!”
“But, what about Rory and Sookie?”
“Rory, she’s great and I miss her like crazy, but she’s my kid. Sookie, love her to death, but I can’t talk to anyone like you. I just wish this friendship wasn’t so…”
Luke moved out of the doorway and towards the window.
“So what?” asked Luke.
        “lonely”
Luke looked at her for a moment and tried to figure out what she was thinking? He took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry”
Lorelai looked at him with a lopsided grin. No, you aren’t.
“So are we okay?”
        “I guess”
“You’re still mad?”
        “Duh, nothing has really changed”
“What I thought we talked; shared a moment”
“No, I talked and you listened. Therapist to patient. Well, I guess that’s what happens when you’re delirously crazy”
Luke put his hand on her shoulder and Lorelai shut her eyes. She knew she was behaving like a jackass. She didn’t even tell him about Jason. Why should she expect him to tell her about his stuff?
“Go home, Luke”
        “huh”
“Go home”
        “Are we okay?”
“Yeah”
