The Economy of Mercy 3/? R
Disclaimer: I own the show yet I'm sitting at this computer writing fanfiction? Likely story. I don't own Gilmore Girls or anything I may take from the Milo episodes of Boston Public. Shock. The banner was made by the amazing Juliana.

Rating: R for Language becuase Jess's friends need to eat soap.

Background: This takes place five years into the future. Everything that happened on the show did happen.

...................................................................

x x x Chapter One: There's Just Two Ways x x x

He hadn’t thought about her in years, five years to be exact. He never expected to see her again. After all, she had told him to leave. She had told him ‘no’.

It was the one time that he had ever shed his pride and offered himself, the only thing he had. He had sworn to never let it happen again, as he got in his car that night and he never looked back.

Until now.

Now every instance in those three years of his teenage life were hitting him at full force.

x Flashback: Three years in the past x

He reached the door, the outside marked clearly with the words ‘Captain Benjamin Merlo’.

He wasn’t nervous. None of this was his fault.

Sure he was drunk. Sure had had smashed the bartender’s head through a window.

But it wasn’t his fault.

He had wanted one more drink. Just one, and he would have left without a word. But the guy had to play hero. Apparently he ‘already had enough and it was time for him to go home’. For some inane reason this angered Jess and now he was sitting in the police station facing assault charges.

It wasn’t his fault.

It was hers.

“Jess Mariano...” The man at the desk said while letting a bitter laugh escape from the back of his throat. “I never expected to see you again.”

“I know, it’s been what, ten years? I must say, I’ve missed this place.”

“You never cease to amaze me.”

Silence.

“I mean, I’ve seen you at your worst. I helped you when you stole that bike from Barry’s and got your face kicked in by group of his friends. I was even there when you were thirteen and decided to take your Mom’s car for a joy ride right into a telephone pole. Every time you’ve gotten into trouble I’ve helped bail you out saying ‘He’s just a kid.’ ‘His parents don’t care about him.’ ‘He doesn’t know any better.’ But now… Now you’re 21 years old and in a shit load of trouble.”

“Thanks for the update.” He replied sarcastically.

Ben scowled. “You haven’t changed.”

“No, still my old charming self.”

“I’m going to cut to the chase. This is your third offense. You’ve got two choices. I can either cut you some slack, again,or you can rot in jail for a year.”

“You serious?”

“No, I just wanted to freak you out.” Sarcasm dripped off the statement and Jess smirked. Her hadn’t changed either. “Look Jess, I’m about ready to throw in the towel. I can’t keep doing this. You either take the job I’m offering or you’re going to court.”

He nodded. “I’ll take the job.” He didn’t even bother to find it what it was.

x End Flashback x

It was an easy job. Go in, find the drugs, get out. He could be that kid, the kid on the corner buying pot from the local dealer. He knew how to be that kid. He was paid to be that kid.

His new assignment? Mayview High.

His job was to become a seventeen year old, befriend a young girl and bust her brother for marijuana. It was nothing new. He had done it many times before.

But none of it ever had anything to do with her. She was supposed to be overseas, crawling in trenches, and hiding in bomb shelters. She was not supposed to be a teacher. And she sure as hell wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near Mayview, anywhere near him.

x Flashback: Three hours ago x

“So the job’s pretty routine. The go-to’s name is Kara. You’ll get in through her. Her brother’s supposed to be the dealer but we’re sure he’s getting it from someplace else. All the information’s here.” He stated as he handed Jess the paper’s. He looked them over as Ben continued to talk. “You’re name is Jake Farell. Your in eleventh grade. That’s the list of employees. We’ll inform the principal but everyone else will be on a need to know basis.”

“That all?”

“Pretty much. You’ll be wired at all times so keep your ear piece in. Keep your gun on the inside of your jacket or in your back pack, I recommend the pocket. Keep the safety on and don’t shoot anybody.”

“I never have.” He tapped his fingers on the table, obviously bored. He had heard this speech too many times to count.

“So, I guess were done.”

Jess nodded and got up, heading for the door.

“Take care of yourself, kid.” Ben muttered almost inaudibly.

Jess shook his head and smirked, shutting the door quietly as he exited.

He pulled out the notes and skimmed them again. His eyes drifted over the list of employee’s.

Caroline Krushke: Global Studies.

David McDonnell: Math A.

Travis Spillman: AP Chemistry.

Lorelai Gilmore: English Literature.

Lorelai Gilmore.

The smile quickly left his face.

x End Flashback x

Some would call it fate. He himself would call it her revenge, another chance to twist the knife. No one could leave well enough alone and seven years wasn’t long enough to erase the history they had.

His thoughts were interrupted as a locker slammed in his face. It’s owner, Ian, scowled at him. “Are you even listening Mariano?”

“No, not really.” He replied as he removed his jacket and placed it on the nearby bench.

“I asked what you were doing tonight but you’ve obviously got your head in the fucking clouds.”

“He’s still hung up on that Sarah chick.” Interjected another voice from behind him, it was Scott.

Jess sighed, it was like this everyday after work. They’d stand in the station locker room and have the same conversation, over and over again.

“He just needs to get laid. I mean, it’s been what, two weeks?”

“Three and a half.” Replied Scott, matter-of-factly.

Jess looked over at him while lifting an eyebrow. “How the hell do you know that?”

“I can tell. It’s written all over your face.”

“You’re so full of shit.” Muttered Ian as he threw a towel at the guy’s head.

“No seriously. What happened to Jess ‘The man’?” He stopped only to add exaggerated air quotes. “Getting bored?”

“Don’t you guys ever get tired of talking about my sex life?”

“Oh man, remember Allison?”

“The stripper?” asked Scott, as he struggled to button up his jeans.

“No, no, no, no, no. Allison was the red head.”

Jess sighed. “Guess not.”

“I’m taking her out tonight.”

“Have fun.” I give you my condolences…

“We’re all going.” It wasn’t an order, it was a hidden invitation.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Come on Jess, you need to get out. Maybe you’ll even get lucky.”

He sighed again. “I never called her.”

“What?”

“Allison. She gave me her number, I never called.”

“Why the hell not? She’s fucking hot dude.”

Jess just rolled his eyes, slammed his locker shut and headed for the door. He was sick of talking.

“Asshole.” Ian muttered. “So you think I got a shot with her?”

Scott laughed. Jess just kept on walking.

Re: The Economy of Mercy 3/? R
A/N: The old warnings still apply. I don't own it. Jess's friend's need to go on a soap diet. Let's except and move on, shall we? ;)

x x x Chapter Two: To Lose Yourself In This Life x x x

He was trying to decide. Should he tell her? Give her time to ingest his reoccurrence in her life? Should he just walk in tomorrow like nothing was wrong?

That was the typical Jess thing to do. Leave and then appear randomly without a care in the world. But how was he supposed to explain this to her?

He hadn’t even wanted this job in the first place. It was handed to him and he couldn’t say no.

x Flashback: Three years in the past x

There he stood, staring at the wall. He had been in this building a lot as a child, but never in this room. I reminded him of high school, with all the locker’s lining the walls. He leaned back on one as a group of guys entered the room.

He wasn’t looking forward to this.

“You the rookie?” One asked him.

“No.” He replied simply. Honestly, he had no idea why he was here. He just didn’t feel like talking.

“Guys, this is Jess Mariano. He’s working here now, taking over for Derek.”

“Great, I’m Scott Everson. This is Ian Stiles.” He offered his hand, Jess ignored it.

“The guys will show you your locker, and I’ll give you your stuff later.” He slapped Jess on the back and he glared at the man. This wasn’t what he wanted, wasn’t what he expected.

“I need to talk to you.”

“I’m sure it can wait, Jess.” His tone had a marked superiority. It unnerved Jess to no end.

“No, now.” He replied as he pulled Ben into the hall and shut the door quickly behind him.

“You can’t keep doing that Jess.” He sighed and smoothed out the wrinkles on his shirt.

Jess ignored him. “What the hell is this?”

“What do you mean?”

“You said job, you never said I’d be a cop.”

“This is a police station. What else did you think you’d be doing?”

“I thought I’d be cleaning or something.” He paused. “I can’t do this.”

“You can and you will.” Again with the condescending tone. He fought the urge to punch the guy, remembering the reason he was there in the first place.

“Ben, I’ve spent the majority of my life running from the cops.”

“Well, this job will probably make that a bit more difficult. But you’re creative, you’ll figure something out.”

Jess stared at him blankly. The urge was getting much harder to fight.

“Now get out there and meet the boys.”

If Ben had given him the time he would have informed him that he’d rather be pushed out of a moving train. But Ben didn’t give him the time. He was sent straight back into a room full of complete strangers.

The man he remembered as Scott, pointed towards his locker. “So this is yours. If you have any questions just ask. I’m here to help.”

“And no, he’s not gay he’s just really in touch with his feminine side.” Interjected Ian from the back. “Oh, a little advice?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t die. Everyone always dies. Gets fucking annoying after awhile.” Scott looked at him, bewildered. “This is what, the forth guy to fill the position this year?”

Scott laughed, as if finally getting the non-existent joke. “He’s just fooling around. No one really dies.”

“No shit Sherlock.” He scowled. “I think he got it the first time.”

“He’s just in a bad mood. His girlfriend dumped him.”

“She didn’t fucking dump me. We’re taking a break.”

“Face it dude, you’ve been dumped.” He replied, as he draped his arm around the other guy’s shoulder.

“It’s just, she wants me to tell her what I’m thinking. Like, I’m actually thinking all the time.”

Scott sighed. “You just gotta make up some feelings and tell her you have ‘em.”

“Is desire to have sex a feeling?” Ian offered hopefully. Jess groaned.

This was insane.

x End Flashback x

He had worked for three years and he was used to it. In a way the idea had grown on him, a lot like Stars Hollow had.

“Hey Jess.” He looked up, Alison. She was a no one who obviously thought she was a someone. She was Curley’s wife. Ian didn’t have a prayer.

“You never called me.”

He took another swig of his drink, listening to the laughing of the guys in the bar behind him. “I was busy.”

“You said you would call.”

He shrugged. “I lied.”

“Lying is wrong. It’s a sin.” She looked at him innocently, her hand falling to his leg.

“Yeah well, so is dressing like a whore but that never stopped you.” It was a cold remark but she didn’t care, her hand continued to travel.

“Hey Ian! Your girl’s getting horny, I think it’s time to take her home.” She glared at him as Ian returned to the table.

He smirked. “Is she now?”

“I’m not going anywhere with you, bastard.”

“A little too feisty for my taste. You need another beer.”

“Whatever.” She got up and left the table, making eye contact briefly with Jess on her way out.

“I keep asking her to sleep with me.” He paused to take a drink. “She’s gotta give in one of these times.”

“You’re hopeless.”

“I know.” He took another drink and Jess looked around the bar aimlessly. “So what’s with you?”

He snapped out if it. “Huh?”

“Are you really still hung up on Sarah? Cuz if you are, that’s kinda pathetic man.”

“I don’t even remember who Sarah is. I recognize the name but the mental image just isn’t clicking.” He continued to search the room. He had no idea what he was looking for but he searched anyway.

“So, if it’s not Sarah, who is it?”

“No one, I’m just tired.” He replied, lamely.

“That’s complete shit and you know it.”

Jess just shrugged and took another sip of beer. Ian did the same.

“I know it’s late and you all have lives but I called this meeting for a reason.” The principal shouted.

They had all fallen into a deep discussion on what take out would need to be ordered for that evening. Everyone had to have a say.

Rory just pulled out a book and began reading, it was the best way to drown out the noise. They were worse then her students.

“Listen up!” If he couldn’t get them to shut up, he would just talk over them. “We’re here for a reason. The Terra Nova scores for the high school came in-”

“How is this news? You’re here to tell us we all suck and our kids flunked the test.” Came a voice from the end of the table.

“No, that’s not it at all. It’s the exact opposite actually. The English and Math scores have improved by over 50 percent-”

“You mean…” Travis gave an exaggerated sigh.

“Yes, the kid’s might have actually learned something from this new curriculum.” Gasps of ‘It’s a miracle’ and ‘So, there is a God.’ Were heard throughout the room as he continued. “And the thanks all goes to Dave and Rory.”

He rolled his eyes. “Great, great. Can we go now?”

“No, not yet.” He continued. “I want to give my congratulations to the pair. They obviously know what they are doing…unlike some people.”

“Congratulations.” He replied sarcastically. “Look, I’ve got to get home. I promised my wife I wouldn’t be late for dinner.”

“You’ve still got a wife?” asked the shocked man next to him.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, I’m just surprised is all…”

“Yeah, sure you are.”

The principal sighed, defeated. “You know, we’ll finish this tomorrow.”

“Hallelujah.”

Rory sighed and got up, another pointless meeting. Personally, she would like nothing more then to have Travis fired. He was a complete jack ass.

“What’re you thinking?” Interjected a voice from behind her. She smiled, Dave.

“I’m thinking about how satisfying it would be for Travis to finally get what’s coming to him.”

The man chuckled. “You’re evil.”

“I know, I get it from my mother.”

He looked at her meaningfully, and she felt a warm glow spread throughout her body. She cherished the feeling.

“So you still up for tonight?”

“Definitely.” I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

“Okay, well I’ll see you then.” He winked at her as he headed down the opposite hallway. She shook her head.

“Oh, make sure to tell Mercy I said hi.”

“I'll do that.” She smiled again.

That feeling, it just might be love.

x x x Chapter Three: And Neither Way Is Safe x x x

The house was quiet when she arrived home that night. The babysitter was asleep on the couch. Mercy sat next to her reading a picture book, her hair falling in front of her face, blocking her out from the rest of the world. Rory smiled as she sat her bag down on the floor. It felt familiar.

“You should be in bed.” She stated as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind the four year olds ear.

“Shh.” Her eyes widened as she placed a finger to her lips. “Sarah’s sleeping.”

“I’ll take care of her, you go brush your teeth.”

“But Mommy-”

She cut her off. “No buts.” The girl glared as she stood up and stomped towards the bathroom, stopping just before she reached the door.

“Can I use the big girl toothpaste?” She asked, hopefully.

Rory smiled. “Sure, just put the cap on when you’re done.”

“Okay.” Rory watched as the girl skipped happily out of the room and sighed. She didn’t like leaving her daughter home everyday but it was her only option. She wanted to work and being pregnant had crushed all the dreams she once had about becoming a journalist. She had had a hard enough time getting through college, let alone leaving the country.

Now her biggest problem was a careless babysitter. If Mercy didn’t like her so much then she’d have been fired that first time this had happened.

“Sarah.” She shook her but the teenager just groaned and turned over. “Wake up.”

“Geez...What!” The girl sat up angrily and looked around the room. Realization suddenly dawned on her as the face in front of her finally came into focus. “Shit.”

“Oh yeah.” She replied in a tone that she had undoubtedly picked up from her mother.

“I fell asleep.”

“I noticed.”

“I left Mercy unsupervised.”

“Yup.”

“In a house full of sharp objects, chemicals, and electrical appliances.”

“You’re really not helping your case.”

“Are you going to fire me?” The girl cringed as she waited for an answer. Her dad would kill her for this.

“I might have to consider it.”

“No, please, it’ll never happen again. I need this job. I’ll do anything.”

“Really?” She questioned as she lifted an eyebrow. “Who’s the boy?”

Rory watched as she smiled and fell back on the couch. “His name’s Mike. My dad hates him, but he’s so nice. And He really cares about me. He loves music and books and he’s just so perfect.”

She shook her head as she listened to the girl babble. ‘Been there, done that.’ She thought to herself.

“And he wants this relationship to be different. We’re going to be equals. Which means I pay for my own food. But if you fire me I’ll have no money and then he’ll think I’m trying to cheat him and then he’ll break up with me and I can’t deal with that!” She stopped and gasped for air. Rory couldn’t help but smile again.

“Promise it won’t happen again?”

“I promise.” She answered quickly. Rory looked at the girl in false contemplation. She had no idea why she was taking pity on this girl. Maybe it was because Mercy liked her or because she felt for her situation. Either way, Sarah wasn’t going to be fired that night.

She sighed. “Okay, don’t let it happen again.”

“Thanks you, thank you, thank you.” She repeated as she hugged Rory and headed for the door. “And don’t worry about paying me for tonight. It’s free of charge.”

“Yeah, yeah.” She replied as she motioned towards the door. The girl reminded her of herself at that age. Before her senior year and before she had gotten her heart broken for the first time. Her life had spiraled downwards since then, from Dean to Logan to Mercy.

Her last three years of college were the most terrifying of her life. She made a mistake. The mistake that was soon to be labeled ‘the family fault’. She had her own Christopher now, just wrapped in a different package. If it wasn’t for her mother, she never would have survived it all.

Flashback

She had never liked hospitals that much. They scared her. There were so many people being wheeled by, some on the edge of death and others who had already crossed the line and fallen over. Since she was a child, hospital had meant sick. She’d never thought it would mean life. She never thought she’d be sitting on a table with her mother, discussing baby names.

“Would you like to see a picture of your baby Miss Gilmore?” asked the doctor. Rory nodded, trying to swallow the fear and apprehension that seemed to have coiled in the back of her throat.

The minute the gel was applied and she was able to look at her child, the fear disappeared. She wanted to know more.

“Oh, look at the little feet, the spine.”

Lorelai tilted her head and leaned forward slightly. “What’s that on it’s head?”

“Yeah, it kinda looks like a little cap.”

Lorelai snorted. “I guess that’s where the condom ended up then, huh?” It was hard to accept this but it was even harder to bite back the I told you so. She knew it was hypocritical but frankly, she didn’t care. She could be supportive but she wasn’t going to treat Rory like broken glass.

“Would you like to know the sex?”

“Hmm?” She wasn’t paying attention, her eyes were fixed on the small black and white screen that sat a few feet away from her. She was going to be a mom.

End Flashback

Looking at her daughter now, she couldn’t imagine life without her. Mercy was a quiet and observant. She rarely talked to strangers, but when she did she sounded older, intelligent. Her blue eyes always held a devious sparkle. A trait that she had obviously inherited from her grandmother. Her hair was a heartbreaking blonde. In a way it saddened Rory, it was trait that connected her to her father. The trait that would always give her the label of bastard child.

“Mom?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you gonna marry David?” Rory looked at her daughter peculiarly. Since when did she call people by there first names?

“David?”

“Dad said that David’s gonna be my new daddy.”

Rory sighed. “Your dad’s wrong. Mr. McDonnell are just really good friends.” She knew it was a lie but she didn’t want to confuse her. There was a fine line between boyfriend and husband but it could sometimes be hard for a 4 year old to see.

“Oh.” She looked at the bed in contemplation and Rory shut off the light. “Mom?”

“Yeah?” she asked as she gave her daughter one last glance from the opened door.

“Can you sleep in here tonight?”

“Sure.” She smiled as she laid down on the bed next to her daughter. Mercy snuggled up next to her and Rory twisted a stand of blonde hair around one of her fingers.
