So what happens to Green?
While the Sixers aren't legally obligated to sign Willie now, they might want to help him out with medical expenses, etc. The question is, how are the Sixers and Green bound now?
Assume that Green's knee is diagnosed as torn ACL. Which implies done for pretty much the season. The Sixers obviously don't throw 20 million at him, but once the FA signing period ends, then Green is no more a RFA. Can the Sixers and Green work something out, so that they can maintain his early-Bird rights and still give him money for next year say? Has anything like that happened before? Most injuries like that usually happen when guys are on contracts, not when they are RFAs...
So my guess is that Green will sign the qualifying offer (so that insurance can pick his medical expenses - I am guessing that should still be legal) and he and the Sixers might make an honorary agreement that next year he will stay with the Sixers (although I am not sure if his bird rights are retained and the Sixers are going to have to allocate part of their MLE to Green)...
Any ideas?
