Selective Mutism
Hi,
I'm a Speech and Language THerapist working with adults with learning disabilities. I have recently been working with a young lady (18) who stopped speaking about a year ago. This was during a time of great change for her. Before this, despite her learning disability, she spoke in sentences. She now tends not to speak in any situation eg. at home or the Day Centre, although she will occasionally say a few words, when there is something really important to her that she has to get across. All info I've come across has been about people who talk in some situations, but not others. Trying to get a balance of not pushing her too much, but giving her opportunities where she needs to speak.
Has anyone got any ideas?
