Roleplaying and the Movie
How do you think the LotR movie will effect roleplaying games set in Middle Earth?

Re: Roleplaying and the Movie - Elves
Having seen the movie once only, I have only a few points to make so far.

Elves....
There are not many of them left, they are aloof, somewhat emotionless, otherworldly, and they are all very old and very experienced. And VERY deadly. Although this was always the case, I hope the film will instill this into players. Elves are not like men, they don't have the same yearnings or motivations. In many past MERP games, Elven characters were 10 a penny, and were often picked as characters because they were really quite powerful compared to men.

The perception skills of Legolas were well done, and serve to remind us of Elves superior sight and hearing. Therir feyness comes accross on Caradhras where Legolas leaves no footprints in the snow.

Elven Magic
Arwens use of elven magic when healing Frodo, calling the flood to wash the Nazgul away, Galadriels powers and the powers imbued in simple elven items such as the sword Sting, the ropes, broaches etc (not seen in the movie - are they there?) show that they have a deep seated magical countenance that imbues all things Elven. I hope this translates to the game.

Elven locations.
I thought Lorien was a fantastic location. What a dark yet magnificent land, again magical and beautiful, otherworldly and fey. The way the forest was manipulated to provide a home was amazing, sort of one with nature. Not the place you would want to stray into, however. So secret that (as Gimli says) those who enter fall under a (Galadriels) spell and are never seen again. So these elves guard their borders jelously, remember that.
Rivendell was a different place, though. Still secret and guarded, but less in tune with the land. However, it was still beautiful and magical. It was also very obviously old. Many ruined places could be seen there, overgrown, almost forgotten, yet still in use.
Its a pitty we havnt seen the Wood Elves Realm of Mirkwood, as Im sure that would show a darker side of the elves....

Comments please.

MERP and the Movie
I agree wholeheartedly about the elves in the movie. The orcs were handled very well too. For so long they've been reduced to the status of vaguely comic hero fodder who are too stupid to live, kind of like evil Keystone Kops. The movie shows them for what they always were: brutal, savage creatures suited wholly to killing, destroying, defiling and violating, and if children and adults are having nightmares about orcs then they are back where they came from.

I haven't played MERP for over 10 years mainly because it always used to turn into just another D&D hack and slash game or worse still Carry on Lord of the Rings. I think it's always been difficult for a GM to get across the depth and subtlety of Tolkien's world especially as players have different ideas about it, which is probably why MERP games seemed to devolve into puerility and disappointment so often. That's not to say that puerility can't be fun, it's just that in MERP its a terrible waste of a truly wonderful setting.

Now that the movie is out and has turned out to be such a powerful and well realised vision of Middle Earth, I'm dusting off my copy of MERP and preparing a couple of scenarios to try out on my group. IMHO the movie is what MERP has been waiting for all these years.

Movie and RP???
Oh, don't remind me of roleplaying and the movie. I have the Decipher one and am starting a chronicle; 4 players so far. 1 is a Legolas clone, 1 is an Aragorn clone, and 1 is a power-gamer. If not for the fourth character, I fear I would cast my corebook back into the fires where it was wrought.

Re: Movie and RP??? rule play then, perhaps???
Oh dear.

I hope you can reform your players, a simple use of Wargs should suffice to let them know just how vunerable they are in the 'real world'!

Ive just put some expanded MERP scenarios on the city of solis site
