Please Help
My family and me found a rabbit hole in our backyard. There were many baby rabbits in there. My sister started petting them but I told her not to do it. One of my friends said that if you touched them, the mother wouldn't want them anymore. I really want to know if thats true. Several days have passed now, and my mother caught two. She's decided to keep them and I beg her to let them go. I think its really sad to take them away from their mother. Is it okay to keep them? Will the mother accept them if we let them go? Please help answere these questions. |I

Re: Please Help
I know almost a month has passed but you should know that it is illegal to keep wild rabbits as pets in most states. If you are currently keeping them as pets you can not just let them go they will not know how to survive as you took them away from their mother before they could completely learn survival skills. You must take them to a wildlife rehabilitator so that they can re-learn those skills and be released back into the wild where they belong.

Your sister should not have been touching them. Wild rabbits can carry many diseases that can be passed to humans or other pets that you have. It is not true that a mother rabbit won't come back to her babies. It may seem like she hasn't but in the wild mother rabbits stay away from their nests to lessen the chance that their nest will be found by people and/or other animals. Wild and domesticated rabbits feed their babies about twice a day. They are not like cats and dogs, they won't stay with their babies.

They next time you (or anyone else reading this) find a rabbit hole do not touch the babies. If you have uncovered the nest try to cover up the nest the way you found it. Then stay away from the nest and do not disturb it again. You may be tempted to take a look but please don't. If those babies become used to humans they will seek out humans and will not surive in the wild.
