OT - Hey Jem, since you're the movie dude...
I recommend Hustle&Flow. It was actually a far cry better than I thought it would be.

Terrence Howard was strong in this movie. Very strong. I loved it...

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Hustle & Flow
What with the 3200 for a new transmission I spent last week, money's kind of tight, but Hustle and Flow is definitley on my list. Read a not so favorable review of the film, saying it fell apart at the end and became too cliche'd because of use of a gun, but i['m definitely wanting to see this movie.

Being in Santa Barbara, it might already be gone, but I'll catch it.

only 60 more days until serenity though, and nothing else really matters :D

The gun was necessary, I thought. Cliche'd? Yeah. But still necessary. I didn't think it 'fell apart' because of that. Plus, if whomever did that review could only talk about that part of the movie, it would seem to me that he/she missed a LOT.

I thought the first 2-3 minutes of the movie was kinda confusing. It made you wonder what time it was actually supposed to be set in, but after that, it was pretty powerful stuff.

There were a few really good performances in it, but Terrence Howard absolutely carried it. Whatever agency cast the movie definitely did their job. DJ Qualls put in a decent performance, and the girl who played TH's pregnant 'bottom @#%$' (don't know her name) was outstanding.

I only really went to see it because John Singleton made it. Had anybody else done this movie, I'd have waited for it to show on cable. It wouldn't have been real enough for the subject matter. It actually struck me as more real and gritty than 'Boyz In The Hood' (which, to this day, I feel like Morris Chestnut and Nia Long almost ruined).

Just to give you an idea, two old white ladies (looked to be in their 60s) walked out of the movie thinking it was fantastic. :lol That's true, though. Blew my mind.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Re: Hustle & Flow
I believe the woman you are referring to is Taryn Manning, she's very talented, I have liked her for a while, she doesn't get lots of roles.

As for DJ Qualls, just something about him, he just always good :)

Re: Hustle & Flow
The first time I ever saw DJ was in 'The New Guy' with Eddie Griffin. I thought he was pretty good in it for the kind of movie it was. Haven't seen him in anything else since, though. (actually, I almost remember him having a bit part in something, just can't remember what it is)

I'm with you though, there's something about that, bony, butt-ugly kid that just makes you feel like he has a lot of good roles left in him still.

Re: Hustle & Flow
DJ Qualls was also in "The Core" as a big time computer geek who likes hot pockets and xena

His first "big time role" that I saw was called, i believe, road trip, with breckin myer, and, sadly, tom green.

The New guy gets bonus points cause eliza dushku is in it

Re: Hustle & Flow
Great movie, just wanted to correct the actress LBD is referencing. Her name is Taraji Henson, she was the girlfriend in 'Baby Boy.' However, Taryn Manning was incredible in this film as well. All around good movie and LBD is correct, Terrence Howard carried it on his shoulders.

My only criticism, though minor, is the extreme accents of the characters. Appeared a little too exaggerated.

Fave scene was the opening monologue and the exchange between Luda & Terrence in the bar, when Terrence passed him the cassette that had his 'heart and soul pumping through it.' You could FEEL the passion, desperation and hunger of the lead character.

Having spent three years in Millington, TN, and a decent amount of time in Memphis and other areas, I'm afraid those accents weren't extreme at all. That was back in 1989-1992. I'd imagine with the 'Dirty South' coming up in rap the way it has, that the accents are even more pronounced now. Singleton might have been cutting us a break. :lol I couldn't understand a word some of those guys were saying back then.
