New graduate + jobs shortage = agency work?
Hello - -

I qualified this year as a speech and language therapist but the shortage of jobs over the past few months shows no signs of abating, with large number of applications for the same posts and I know other people who are in the same boat and are just as worried.

I've started to consider applying to healthcare agencies who offer locum positions. The Royal College doesn't seem to approve of this but the RCSLT booklet for new graduates states: "The RCSLT does not recommend that newly-qualified SLTs take agency posts unless it is for the short term, while waiting to take up a permanent position." So I'm of two minds what to do: the benefits are obvious, but am I taking a risk if I were to take up a locum post for the short-term, and if so what are the risks? In one sense I think, it's not my fault there is a job shortage so why not take the opportunity while it's there.

Thanks :)
