NHS Funding
Hi,

Can any past /current students give me advice about NHS bursaries? I had the impression from the literature sent to me that there was a basic grant and anything after that was means tested but having spoken to a few current students it seems that some people don't get anything apart from their fees.

I'm not classed as an independent student as I'm under 25 and have only been working & supporting myself for two years (since uni) and it seems that you have to be working for three years until your bursary is based on your own/partner's income. It looks as though my bursary will be means tested against my parents' income based on this (even though I havn't lived with them in five years!).

Can anyone shed any light on this as it seems to be impossible to find any info?

Many thanks,
Shiv

Re: NHS Funding
Hi Shiv,

I'm in a very similar position to you regarding the NHS bursary. I'm off to study the postgrad in September, I'm also under 25, have only worked for 2 years since uni, and will be living with my parents therefore not classed as an independent student.

I've read through the NHS bursary literature, and found it a bit unclear. I understood that on top of fees being paid for, you would receive a grant, but that it is less if you are not independent (bad news for us!). I'm waiting to hear back as to how much I will get, but I don't think it will be a great amount.

Sorry to sound a bit vague, but I'm trying to get my head round it to! I hope that clears it up a bit for you.

grants
Hi,

So, have you filled out a grants form yet? I haven't received anything and I'm a bit worried. I've called them, emailed them, faxed them and even sent a letter by post asking when I would recieve an application form but haven't had a response! Did your application form automatically get sent to you or did you have to request one?
:rolleyes

Re: grants
Hi,

I had the application form automatically sent to me. Once you have accepted a place at a university, the university then contacts the NHS grants unit on your behalf, and informs them that you have a place, and the form is then sent to you. You shouldn't have to contact the grants unit at all.

If you haven't yet received your form, I suggest you contact your university and let them know, as I understand it is down to them to inform the grants unit.

I wouldn't worry about it being late, as there is not a deadline. You don't receive the grant prior to starting the course, so there is no rush to get it completed before term begins. Once you have started the course, the university lets the grants unit know that you have actually started, and the grant is then given to you.

phew!
Hi,

thanks for your advice. Finally got sent the applicaion form last week after I'd faxed them. I think my name must have got swallowed up into a black hole somewhere! The first form they sent me had someone elses name on it...but I eventually got the proper one, although I'm not expecting much!
