More to The Wizard of (Gold Ounces) Oz than you might know
I've known this for a while, but this article adds a few things that I didn't know: www.halexandria.org/dward313.htm

So is this supposed to be some accusation by Balm against the evil powers, or a mocking confession by the greedy bankers who knew they'd never be believed, similar to how they're always secretly sneaking the devil's horns into everything (spider-man!!!)?
About the Ax, the US had considered itself over the crown for over a century, every since it succeded from Britain.
In the original story, Dorothy's slippers were silver. They still are in all the subsequent stories of Oz (about 40 by my count, what do THEY represent pray tell?)
It may also interest you to know that the Wizard of Oz was PUBLISHED in 1900. That means he was probably writing it about 1895 or so. That's a heck of a lot of time before the 1930s it's supposed to be a representation of don't you think? Seems kind of STUPID to me.

You are right... It is an allegory telling the events of the Panic of 1890. The silver slippers represent silver (America was on what was called a bimetal standard then, both gold and silver.) I guess that Baum's point was that American gold was being stolen from this country and taken to Europe, allowing for the manipulation of the American economy and causing the depression. Remember William Jennings Bryan's Cross of Gold speech? It was a very dumb speech in my opinion... Look it up. Anyhow, it appears that Frank L. Baum (who was an economist by the way) was in favor of a single silver standard over a gold or bimetal standard because European bankers controlled most of the gold in the world at the time.
However, the article above is about the movie and not the book, and the movie was a 1930's production that includes changes to the story, like ruby slippers etc...

Yeah, they also cut out the point where the Tin woodsman saves a mouse from a bobcat (fatcat politicians) by cutting off it's head, then the mouse turns out to be queen of the mice and when they all fall asleep in the poppy glades, it's not snow at all that wakes them up, the mice carry them out and they wake up on their own.
Maybe that's the change that signifies the difference between the 1890s and the 1930s!

President Andrew Jackson stated in reference to the bankers at the state of his administration: "You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the Eternal God, I will rout you out."
"Our Founding Fathers believed that it was self-evident that the God of Nature is the sovereign of the universe and everything in it (as well as mankind) and that He had endowed all mankind with "certain unalienable rights" making them self-directing sovereigns, which means that any governments instituted among men derive their just powers (only) from the consent of the governed, who are the source of earthly power and authority. Hence any attempt to exercise any powers NOT conveyed by the People is unjust and unauthorized, and any act done pursuant to such usurpation of power is void."
"If one understands that socialism is not a share-the-wealth program, but is in reality a method to consolidate and control the wealth, then the seeming paradox of super-rich men promoting socialism becomes no paradox at all. Instead, it becomes logical, even the perfect tool of power-seeking megalomaniacs. Communism or more accurately, socialism, is not a movement of the downtrodden masses, but of the economic elite."
