Inherently Unfair and self Defeating
Inherently Unfair and Self Defeating.

Here we have a situation where a player, not holding out, is injured doing just what his team wanted him to do, namely practice and work on his game in the off season.

What is unfair is that this player was thrilled with the contract the team offerred him and would have signed it, probably before he was injured, if the NBA rules had allowed.

What is self defeating is that in the future, players in Willie's situation, meaning restricted free agents who are not permitted to sign, will have to just sit at home and not play basketball in order to protect themselves.

Now it is possible that Willie has some type of insurance against this type of thing, but I do not know how that would work.

RFA's and the Injury Risk
The Sixers should somehow treat Willie right. This injury risk is probably why Sam did train as hard as he might have this summer(and last too for that matter). He could have sustained a 60 million dollar injury. This is also why I think the Eagles should have done something for TO when he risked his career by playing in the superbowl.

Re: RFA's and the Injury Risk
The eagles did do something for TO, they gave him a big fat contract made him the highest or second highest paid receiver in the NFL and rescued him from San Francisco (and Baltimore) when he wanted to come to Philly. There is no comparison between TO and WG, even in behaviors, TO Is a loud mouthed egotist who needs to be the center of attention and will most likely pout and play "weak" to force a trade from the eagles. At which point i hope the eagles suspend his ass without pay.

As for Willie Green. I have no doubt the sixers will help him out. They will probably pay for his medical expenses and rehab (See Ronny Turiaf out in LA for another example) and they will maintain his rights. I'm sure some kind of injury exception can be worked out. This sucks for willie, but his career isn't over.

Re: RFA's and the Injury Risk
IMO the Sixers should offer him at least a 1 year deal worth at least what his deal was scheduled to start at. Then, if he makes a full recovery, they can go on from there. but just losing the contract sucks.

Re: RFA's and the Injury Risk

You guys realize that the sixers would be:

1) paying salary for a player who will definitely not see the floor,
2) tying up a roster spot & money that could be used elsewhere
3) having that salary count against their cap,
4) having that salary count for luxury tax, and
5) unable to insure this injury away as it is a pre-existing injury (this is the big one).

In essence, you're asking the team to suck up about 8-9 million dollars. OUCH. If I were WG's agent, maybe I would have taken out an insurance policy to cover him until the moratoruim was lifted.

I agree this sucks and is very unseemly. But the insurance issue is huge. This is a tough situation.
