BSc Newcastle
Hi,
All being well i have a place on the BSc SLT course in Newcastle, starting in sept 05,
As a mature student, changing career im doing cartwheels. however, I currently live miles away from Newcastle so it would be great to get in contact with anyone who will be on the course or who is already there.
From my experience I have found that certain uni's definitely prefer you to have a recent qualification in human biology, mainly so that you understand the basics eg respiration system and nervous system.
I have also found that it is very difficult to get any direct observation with an Slt however, I would just say to keep trying eventually someone will let you shadow them - even if only for a few hours. If not then try and attend question and answer sessions even though they are mainly directed at school leavers it still looks good. Voluntary work is definitely the best idea, I have been volunteering at the local stroke group and not only has it been really informative but also really rewarding. It is fairly difficult to get adult observations so this is another way of doing so.
Try and contact your local Slt even if they cant give you an observation, they maybe prepared to give you time just to ask questions.
best of luck
