Are we over
Authors Note: This is my first GG Fiction, so I hope I can do justice to these great characters.
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters expect those that I have added for creative purposes.
Summary: It starts where Say Something left off. This story contains mild spoilers from 514
Chapter 1: Im an Ex!
Luke stood there in front of Loreleis house wondering how everything had gone so wrong. His head was spinning. She was saying something, but her words werent sinking in. A few minutes ago he was racing around her house looking for her. He was sure something had happened to her. He'd rushed over here; sure that something really awful had happened.
Did she just say Ex-boyfriend,oh Luke thought to himself. This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't how they were supposed to be. Things were going so well up until the other night. He needed to say something, but nothing came out. Maybe this was what she wanted. He found himself mumbling something and walking away. Only he didn't want to be walking away. He wanted to reach out for her, but he just couldn't bring himself to do that.
Lorelei walked into the house and closed the door behind her. She leaned against the door and sank to the floor. She put her head in her hands and tried to fight back the tears that were threatening to pour out. She needed to pull herself together. She had meant what she just said. She wasn't that girl. She didn't want to turn into this pathetic sniveling girl. She wouldn't break down; she couldn't. But, all she wanted to do was cry. This wasn't her. She never cried at the end of relationships. But, this was different. This was Luke. He was gone. Luke was gone. He was it for her and now he was gone.
Im not going to cry. Lorelei you are not going to cry. Think Mary J. Blige. But, my name's not Mary and I am not a black woman and Luke hasn't left me for a white woman.oh
Lorelei pulled herself to her feet and climbed the stairs. She jumped on the bed and started to cry again. She just couldn't seem to stop. No matter what she told herself the tears still kept flowing.
As Luke walked back to the diner, he tried to figure out how things had gone so wrong. He just wanted some time. He needed some time to think. He didn't want to break up, but she forced his hand. She kept getting in his face and it was just too much. Now, the freaks in this town were turning it into an event. When he got to the diner, he found Liz sitting behind the counter.
Liz?
Finally, where did you go?
Why are here? Who let you in?
I still have dads old key
I really should change the locks, muttered Luke.
Hey, I heard that. Don't think I didn't here that.
Luke just grunted in response. He wasn't in the mood to deal with Liz and her antics.
Hey, are you okay? Did you have a fight with Lorelei or something?
I don't want to talk about!
You did, didn't you? What did you do?
Nothing!
You must have done something, okay
Luke walked over to door and yelled Get out! Just get out of here!
Lorelei could here the phone ringing in the distance, but she didn't have the heart to pick it up. She didn't want to face anybody like this. But, the damn thing kept on ringing.
What!
Is that anyway to greet a person, Lorelei, said Emily Gilmore
Oh, are you a person I just assumed that you were some evil alien determined to take over the world.
What are you rambling about?
See, a person would know. That just proves my point. You are an evil alien woman!
What?
I don't speak to Aliens and you are the worst kind. You're evil I tell you! and with that, Lorelai slammed the phone down and unplugged it from the wall socket. She didn't want to speak to her mother. She hated her more than anything right now. Why was she stuck with such horrendous meddling evil parents. She knew that her relationship ending wasn't her mothers fault, but it didn't make what she did right.
Then it suddenly hit her like big tidal wave, Oh, God I'm an EX. I'm Luke's ex

Re: Are we over
Chapter 2
Author’s note: I’m sorry for the lengths of the chapters. I just can’t bring myself to write long chapters…..
Chapter 2: Stop Mocking Me!!!
Lorelei finally lifted her head from the pillow and stared at the flannel shirt that hung on her door. It had been hanging there for days. She tried to peel her eyes from it, but she couldn’t. It just hung there mocking her; reminding her of all that she’d lost. She slowly climbed out of bed and ambled down to the kitchen. The stark emptiness of the house was finally getting to her. There was no Rory to distract her. No Luke standing in the kitchen making her coffee and breakfast.
She put her hands over her ears and yelled, “Stop mocking me dammit!”
This house and everything in it reminded her of Luke. God, she just wanted to escape this pain. She needed to get out of here and away from this stupid little town, but she couldn’t. She had business to run and local responsibilities. She was supposed to be making these stupid costumes for the elementary school play. Lorelei dragged herself upstairs and reluctantly dressed for work.
“@#%$ happens, Lorelei, now deal with it!”
Lorelei grabbed her keys and walked out the front door. It was then that she noticed it. Her garage was different; it was empty. She could feel the hot wet liquid forming in her eyes.
“He took the boat,” she muttered just above a whisper. All the frustrated energy left her body. She felt light-headed. She sat down on the cold wet porch and stared at her garage which no longer held Luke’s boat. This was like the final sign. It was over. There was no use pretending anymore. She couldn’t stay in her happy land of denial any longer. A part of her was clinging to the hope that he’d realize that this was all one stupid misunderstanding. But, she didn’t have anything to cling to anymore. It was obvious that whatever he’d felt for her all those years was now dead. Lorelei sat there on her porch with her face buried in her hands.
--------
Liz stomped into the diner and slammed her keys down on the counter. Luke looked at her with a sense of defeat. He knew that he’d have to talk to Liz about the whole Lorelei mess eventually. But, he didn’t want to do it here in the diner with everybody listening in.
“Upstairs, not here”
        “Fine”
Liz followed Luke up to their dad’s old office which now served as Luke’s only living space. It was sad, really. She had hoped that Lorelei could convince him to make some changes. She was hoping one of those changes would include a new apartment.
“Why did you do it?”
“Hey, she had a role in it”
“Why are you running away? You can’t do this!”
        “I can’t do what?”
“Push her away. That’s what you do when you get scared. Something happened to make you feel threatened so you just push and you push until everyone runs away. Luke, always the martyr”
“I don’t know what you are talking about?”
“Answer this, who broke up with who?”
        “She did”
“Bullshit, you did and in the middle of the freaking market”
Luke blinked twice and tried to let her words register. This had to be some kind of sick joke. All he wanted was a little space; he didn’t mean….Oh, @#%$.
“I just asked for some time to think, but she wouldn’t…”
“So, you dumped her right in the middle of the frozen food aisle”
“Actually it was the vegetable… never mind”
“You have to fix this, before it’s too late. God, do you have any idea what you’ve done.”
Liz stormed out and slammed the door behind her. Luke slowly sat down and ran his hand through his hair.
“This is a total nightmare”
He stared at the tape that she’d given him the other day. He wanted to listen to it again, but was afraid that it would destroy him. Hearing her voice would be too much for him to handle.

Re: Are we over
Author’s Note: This story began as a spoiler fiction, but it has evolved into something else entirely. There might be some references to episodes 514-517. I apologize for the delay, but life, love, and work has gotten in the way.
Chapter 3: The Great Escape
Luke sat in his old leather chair, with the answering machine tape in his hand. He really wanted to hear Lorelai’s voice again, but he wasn’t sure if he could handle the emotions it would bring to the surface. A part of him knew that Liz was right. He needed to fix this. He didn’t want things to be the way they were, but she had forced his hand. She told him a barefaced lie and so had Rory. A part of him wondered if she had asked Rory to lie for her. He didn’t know why she did it. Actually that was a lie, he did know. It was Christopher. It was always him. Every time she disappointed him it was because of Christopher. The man was everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. He was always interfering in her life. In the end, she always went running to him. He just couldn’t deal with it anymore. He knew he had to let her go before it was too late. He’d gone through the roller coaster ride with Rachel and he damn well wasn’t going to get on that ride again. But, he just couldn’t get her out of his head.
“Eight fucking years,” he growled to himself. He’d waited for eight years and for what.
Being with Lorelai was great. She was like a gust of cold air on a hot summer day. Luke closed his eyes and tried to shut her out of his mind.
“I need to make a box, “ Luke said to himself.
So, he ran around the apartment and started putting things away. After an hour of gathering things up he stopped. He realized that he couldn’t just put her away. She was everywhere. He shook his head in despair. This was just too much. Somehow she had permeated his whole life. There wasn’t a single thing he owned that didn’t remind her of him. Luke let out a sigh of defeat before putting everything back where it belonged. He needed to get out of Star’s Hallow. He needed to get away to clear his head.
“I need you to do a favor for me”
“Sure, you sign my checks”
“I need you to manage the diner for a while. Do you think you can handle that?”
“I guess, but why me. Hasn’t Caesar been working for you longer?”
        “Yeah, but I trust you”
“Oh, thanks”
“I’ll show you what needs to be done after your shift tomorrow”
“Okay, Can I ask you a question?”
        “Sure”
“Where are you going?”
        “Somewhere”
“A vague answer”
        “Bye”
“Bye Luke”
Lane was a good kid, but she was almost as crazy as the rest of this town. He felt bad for her. He could tell that she was having a rough time living on her own. He admired the girl for chutzpah. Not many people would have the guts to stand up to their parents the way she did. She kind of reminded him of Lorelai.
“You got to stop this man,” he shouted to himself. He couldn’t seem to help himself. She had this way of invading his brain.
----
Lorelai was standing behind the reception desk shuffling and reshuffling some paper. Michel gave her a dirty look before walking off in a huff. It was strange. The Michel she knew would be armed with a handful of snide remarks. Everybody was acting weird. They were all being so nice. Nice was not a good thing. It was different and the last thing she wanted in her life was more change. It was hard enough learning to live without Luke and his fabulous coffee. This had to end now. She wanted snide Michel and babbling Sookie back. She needed everything to go back to normal. Lorelai marched into the kitchen to deal with the person behind all this change.
“Sookie, this has to stop,” said Lorelai.
But, Sookie was too busy putting something in a pot and giving instructions to the Sous Chef to realize what was going on. Lorelai walked over and took the wooden spoon out of her hand.
“Hello, best friend here”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t see you come in.”
“Why did you wear those special earplugs you bought online again,” said Lorelai as she waved her hands near her ears.
“Oh no, Jackson threw those out months ago. So, what’s up?”
“This has to stop”
“Michel is nice. You’re all cautious. I’m not a baby. I’m not going to fall apart.”
Lorelai stretched her face into an exaggerated smile and said, “See”
“So, you went to Luke’s?”
        “No! I can’t do that.”
“See, you’re not okay.”
“But, I’m getting there. You have to get Michel to be rude again. I can’t handle nice Michel. Nice Michel gives me hives!”
“He does not give you hives!”
Lorelai starts scratching her arms, “See. He does. First, it’s the arms and before you know it my eyes are red and my face gets all puffy like Will Smith in Hitch”
“Gross. Fine, I’ll talk to Michel.”
Just then Michel walks in and says, “Talk to me about what?”
“Lorelai wants you to stop being nice.”
“Finally, I wasn’t sure how much more I could take. I’m French; we are bad with the niceties.”
“Thank God,” shouted Lorelai gleefully.
---
Rory sat up in bed and looked at the figure lying next to her. He had his face buried in a pillow and she thought she detected the faint sound of snoring. She was really getting tired of this. She thought this whole no-strings thing would be fun or even a tad glamorous, but it was neither. What was she thinking this wasn’t her? She didn’t know how to be no-strings girl. She knew how to be a girlfriend, but this was alien territory.
“God, what am I doing?”
“Shh, I’m still trying to get my beauty rest,” mumbled a groggy Logan.
Rory just rolled her eyes and muttered, “Whatever”
“Hey, what’s going on,” asked Logan in a concerned tone.
        “Huh?”
“You seem troubled”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence”
“That’s not what I meant”
        “Enlighten me, then won’t you?”
“You were thinking about something and you had that look on your face”
        “What look?”
“The one where you furrow your brow and pucker your lip like this...” he said as he demonstrated his own version of said look.
“Remind me to develop a whole new set of facial expressions”
“I like the one’s you have now”
“Too bad, I’ve made an executive decision”
“Well, I’m sure they’ll suffice. What do you want to do today?”
“Unlike some people, I actually go to class.”
“I’m going,” Logan paused for a second before adding, “eventually.”
“Glad to hear you have your priorities in order”
Rory gets out of bed and starts to get dressed as Logan lies back and watches her with an appreciative look on his face.
“Come on , you have to go.”
“So, that’s it. No breakfast in bed. Not even a ‘thank you for last night’-I feel so used.”
“Rory leans down and kisses him on the cheek and whispers, “Thank you for last night. Now, get out.”
-----
Lane and Luke are sitting at one of the empty tables in the diner. There are papers scattered all over the table.
“This is the key for the cash register. This is the form you need to fill out every night before closing. Here are the keys for the diner. Caesar has his key. I don’t know how long I’ll be gone. Maybe two weeks or it could be longer.”
        “Can I be nosy here?
“Does my answer matter?”
“Well, no. I thought I’d do you the courtesy of asking though.”
“Hmm”
“Are you leaving because of Lorelai?”
“Hmm”
“That’s a grunt not an answer”
“In my world, it’s an answer.”
“You don’t have to leave. Just talk to her.”
“Lane, do you want to keep your job”
        “Yeah”
“Then shut up”
“Okay, subject close. So, is there anything else I should know?
“Nope, that’s it”
        “What do I tell people?”
“Make something up. I’ll check in every now and then.
Luke put all the papers back in their place and showed Lane where he kept them. A few minutes later she hung up her apron and left for the night. Luke wiped down the counter and went upstairs to get his stuff. He’d packed a small duffel bag full of clothes. He also packed up his tools and fishing gear. He wasn’t exactly sure where he was headed, but he decided to head south and see where he ended up. Lorelai was just leaving Doose’s when she saw Luke’s truck drive by. He looked like he was taking a trip.
“Damn,” she whispered to herself. She really hoped he wasn’t making good on that stupid promise to leave Star’s Hallow if they broke up.
-----
A few days later, Lorelai was sitting in the living room looking at the 12 boxes before her. It was hard to believe that she had accumulated so much Luke Stuff. The boxing away of the stuff was her ritual, but this was insane. There was just too much here that reminded her of Luke, but she had to do it for her sanity. The house was empty and lonely. Everything here reeked of Luke. She saw him everywhere. His scent was still on her pillows, which probably had something to do with the fact that she hadn’t washed the sheets for over a week. His toothpaste was still in the bathroom. She couldn’t even put away his flannel. He’d taken the boat out of her garage a few days ago. He’d taken it to wherever he’d gone. She saw him driving away in his truck with the old boat attached to the back. The sound of her cell phone snapped Lorelai out of her self-imposed daze.
“Lorelai’s house of pain, how may help you?”
        “A tad dramatic, mom”
“Sorry, I’m just going with my gut and my gut is in the mood for some drama.”
        “Give your gut my condolences.”
“I’ll pass on the message”
        “So, what are you doing?”
“Trying to make a Luke box”
        “How’s that going?”
“Not too well. I can seem to stick to one box.”
        “How many have you made?”
“12”
        “You’re not done are you?”
“Not even close”
“Maybe you should just skip the box phase”
“I can’t. The box phase is an integral part”
        “I see”
“This sucks”
“I know, but it will get better”
“No, it won’t. Luke is gone. I ruined everything. Stop listening to me; I’m turning into a bitter old lady. Soon, there will be thousands of cats on my porch.”
“No, stop. I thought you got over the whole cat thing.”
“No, just a temporary hiatus”
He’ll come around. Luke loves you”
“Ha! He hates me. He’s gone”
        “He’ll come back”
“No, he left town”
        “What?’
“Lane didn’t tell you?”
        “Tell me what?”
“He left a few days ago”
        “Oh, man”
“He’s never coming back and it’s my fault”
“No, it is not. He’ll be back. It’s Luke. He just needs some time to process everything.”
“Why can’t he process everything here?”
“I don’t know, mom. Maybe it’s best that you don’t think about this.”
“You’re right. I should go. Lot’s of boxes to put away.”
“Good luck. Call me if you need anything.”
“I will”

Re: Are we overChapter 4
Author’s Note: My apologies for the cliff hanger. Please be patient, I will get to the LL goodness.
Chapter 4: Lorelai’s mission
Lorelai was packing up the last of her Luke boxes when she came across a piece of paper. She opened up the small note and immediately recognized the handwriting. It was a list of songs. A smile came across her face as she remembered that night. How could she forget? It was the most special night of her life. He’d made that list right after their first night together. She could almost feel the soft caress of his touch. She was happy then. The only other time she’d felt like that was the night Rory was born. Lorelai knew what she had to do. She needed to get that feeling back.
---
Lane was busy wiping down the counter when Lorelai walked into the diner. Lorelai just stood their staring at Lane as she wiped down the counter. She was in shock. The whole scene was wrong. She knew he was gone, but seeing and knowing were two different things.
“Hi, Lorelai,” said a chipper Lane.
        “Umm, hi”
“What’s wrong?” Lane knew what was wrong, but she couldn’t help but to ask.
“This. You. You’re wiping the counter.”
“Well, somebody’s got to do it.”
        “I need to sit down”
Lorelai sat on the stool behind the counter and placed her hands under her chin.
“This sucks.”
        “I know”
“Do you know where he went?”
“He said something about water and old people with bad clothes”
Lorelai chuckled to herself as she recalled one of his rants.
“Is he coming back?”
“Yeah, I just don’t know when.”
“Thanks”
        “For what?”
“lying to protect me”
        “I’m not”
Lorelai smiled at the young girl and left the diner. She got into her jeep and sat there with her hands gripping the steering wheel. There was only one other person who would know where Luke was. The state of Florida was just too vague. She needed more. She needed to know where to find him. Lorelai put the car into drive and headed out on the highway towards New York. She parked her car on the main street taking extra car to lock up. That was all Luke. All his badgering finally sunk in. She descended the creaky steps of an aging brownstone. She knocked on the door and was greeted by disheveled Jess.
“Lorelai?”
“Yup, that’s me. Did I wake you up?”
“Not really”
Jess closed the door behind him and leaned against the wall.
“I could always come back later,” said Lorelai.
“No, it’s okay. Give me a sec. I’ll meet you in the coffee shop around the corner.”
“Sure”
Lorelai was relieved that he hadn’t let her in. She wasn’t sure she wanted to know what the inside of his apartment looked like. She walked to the corner and immediately found the coffee shop. She slid into a booth facing the window and ordered a large coffee. Jess walked in a few minutes later. He sat opposite her and flagged down the waitress.
“Coffee and the usual, Stella”
“No problem, kiddo,” said the aging waitress.
“What’s the usual? Do I want to know,” asked a curious Lorelai?
        “You’ll see”
“so, you’re probably wondering what I want.”
“You want to know where Luke is”
“How’d you do that?”
“Trust me; it was a no-brainer.”
“So, where in Florida did he go?”
“You’re good. How’d you know he was in Florida?”
“It was a no-brainer. Are you going to tell me or what?”
        “Somebody’s a little hostile today”
“Honey, hostile is all I have been lately”
“The Keys. He’s got a friend there.”
“Do you have an address?”
“All I have is a name and a number”
“So, can I have it”
        “It depends”
“On what? I’m not going to sleep with you. I have no desire to play the part of Mrs. Robinson.”
        “Eww, gross”
“Gee thanks, for the compliment.”
“That’s not what I meant. Just don’t hurt him again.”
“I’ll try.”
        “He loves you”
“So, everyone tells me. He wouldn’t have left if that was really true.”
“No, that’s exactly what it means”
“I don’t care if he doesn’t. I have something to tell him.”
        “Well, good luck”
Jess took out a piece of paper and slid it across the table. Lorelai took it and put it in her bag. She stood up to leave just as the waitress had brought their order.
“What about your coffee?”
        “It’s all yours.”
“You don’t want coffee?”
“Man, you’ve got it bad,” said Jess.
“Well, thanks for everything.”
Lorelai turned around and left the small coffee shop. She walked back to her car and waited till she was behind the wheel before opening the piece of paper. Luke was staying with a guy called Daniel O’Brien. She took a deep breath before calling Sookie.
“Hello, Dragonfly Inn”
        “Sookie, it’s me”
“Hi, where are you?”
        “I’m in New York”
“What?”
“I’ll fill you in later, but I won’t be in for a few days.”
“Why where are you going?”
“I’ve got something important to do.”
“Oh my God! You’re going after him,” squealed Sookie.
        “Shh, Sookie. Keep it down.”
“This is so exciting”
“I just have to see him”
“Oh, this is so romantic”
“I have to go. Please, don’t tell anyone”
        “Thanks, I’ll call you later”
“Bye, hun. Good luck.”
-----
Rory was getting a cup of coffee when she saw something she wasn’t completely prepared to handle. Logan had his arm draped around a pretty blonde. She took a deep breath and walked right past them. Rory was beginning to find out the true meaning of ‘no strings.’ Why had she agreed to this whole scenario? She knew now that it was a mistake. She wasn’t that kind of a girl. She wanted strings and lots of them. God, she felt so stupid.
“Rory wait up,” said a frantic Logan.
Oh, God. She didn’t want to talk to him. Rory walked faster in a lame attempt at avoiding him.
        “Rory!”
“Yeah”
“Give me a second. I need to catch my breath”
“What do you want?”
“I want to talk about what happened back there”
He just stood there staring at her. It made her feel all quivery inside. Their eyes were locked on each other neither of them willing to look away. Their trance was interrupted by the harsh sound of Rory’s cell.
“Hello”
“Rory, the fruit of my loins”
“Oh, no. Never say that again.”
        “Okay, sorry”
“What’s up?”
“I’m leaving town for a while”
“Why where are you going?”
        “Road trip”
“Luke?”
        “Yup”
“Wow, that’s brave”
“You know me, all guts and no glory.”
“When do you leave?”
        “Now”
“Now? That’s so soon”
“I know. It’s now or never babe”
“I see you’ve been brushing up on your clichés”
“Yeah, I’ve got more. You wanna hear them?”
“No thanks”
“You sound tense. Is everything okay?”
“yeah, honkey dorey”
“uh oh. That’s a serious cry for help”
“Mom, go find Luke”
“I will, but we’ll talk when I get back.”
Rory hung up the phone to find Logan still standing there. He looked poised for a fight and she was not going to let him have one.
“We need to talk,” said Logan.
        “About what?’
“Come on, Ace; be reasonable”
“I am. You wanted no strings. This is what no strings looks like.” God, was this a bad idea though Rory. She slung her bag over her other shoulder and left Logan standing there.

Chapter 5
Author’s Note: I’m sorry for the delay in chapters, but I’m writing several chapters in succession. I am hoping to finish the story in about a week. So, I will be posting two chapters at a time. Enjoy and over course R/R.
Chapter 5: Finding Luke
Lorelai had been driving for a few hours when her cell began to ring. She was too tired to bother checking the Caller ID before picking up the phone.
“Hello”
        “Lorelai, it’s your mother”
“What do you want? I thought I told you I only speak to real people?’
“Don’t speak to me in that tone, Lorelai”
“Okay,” replied Lorelai just before hanging up the phone.
Emily stared at the phone in confusion. She didn’t know what was wrong with her.
“Doesn’t she realize, I was only looking out for her,” Emily mumbled to herself.
She didn’t understand Lorelai. There was no way that ‘diner man’ could make her happy. Why did she choose him? Lorelai had always run away from love, but she wasn’t running from this Luke fellow. She’d known for year that Lorelai had feelings for him. But, she’d assumed that the girl knew better. She thought that was the reason they had waited so long to get together. But, she saw that look in Lorelai’s eyes. She had that same look when she’d first met Richard.
Why couldn’t she look at Christopher like that? Who was she kidding? Lorelai was in love with her diner man and he was all wrong. The sound of footsteps dragged Emily from her thoughts.
“What’s the matter Emily,” asked Richard?
“Lorelai still won’t speak to me”
“Well, that’s to be expected”
        “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You miscalculated, Emily. Did you really think your little plan was going to work?”
        “You’re taking her side”
“Yes, I believe I am. We lost her for years and just when she was back in our lives. You go ahead and do something stupid like this.”
“It wasn’t stupid. She belongs with Christopher.”
“She doesn’t belong with that dimwit. Lorelai needs someone smarter than that?”
“Well, she’s picked one from the bottom of the barrel”
“He’s not the person I’d hoped she would choose, but he certainly isn’t an idiot.”
        “Maybe not”
Richard put his hands on Emily’s shoulder and gave her an affectionate squeeze.
“She’ll come around. We just have to give her some time.”
        “Have I lost her, Richard?”
“No, not completely. I think you need to accept Lorelai for who she is”
“But, she can be so much more”
“She can be anything she wants to, but she doesn’t want what we want for her. She made her choice, Emily.”
        “She’s ruining her life”
“No, she hasn’t ruined anything. She’s just chosen a different path. Look at Rory. She’s a lovely girl and that’s all because of Lorelai. Our girl, she’s made a real life for herself. She runs her own business and she did it all on her own.”
        “Richard, you’re proud of her”
“I am, aren’t I? I am proud of her. Aren’t you?”
        “Yes, I am”
------
Luke was sitting on his friend’s porch looking out at the ocean. It was so peaceful our here. Daniel looked over at his old friend and wondered what had brought him here. In all the years he’d lived here, Luke hadn’t visited him once. But, for some reason he was here now.
“Luke, why are you here?”
        “What do you mean?”
“You’ve never come before. Why now?”
Luke shrugged his shoulders and said, “I just felt like it”
“Bullshit! You never just feel like doing anything”
“Maybe, there’s a first time for everything”
“What about the diner?”
        “It’s in good hands”
Daniel looked at Luke suspiciously. He was acting weird. He had this faraway look in his eyes. He had a sadness in his eyes that hadn’t seen in ages.
“It’s that woman, isn’t it?”
Luke didn’t say a word.
“What happened,” asked Daniel?
Luke shifted uncomfortably. He wasn’t ready to talk about Lorelai yet. He wasn’t sure what he could say. It was just so hard to explain.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” said Luke.
        “Okay, one last question’
“You promise”
        “Scout’s honor”
“Okay, shoot”
        “What’s with the boat?”
“Where I go; it goes”
Daniel wasn’t sure who this woman was, but she sure had Luke tied up in knots. He remember him mentioning this annoying customer years back. But, after while the annoying customer had a name. He almost felt like he knew her. He hated to see his buddy in pain.
“So, how long are you staying?”
“I don’t know. What’s with the fucking third degree today?”
“Well, my old buddy who I haven’t so much as spoken to in the last 6 months just shows up on my doorstep; a doorstep that happens to be hundreds of miles from his home. I think I’m entitled to some answers.”
Luke grunted and took a swig of his beer before answering.
“I left her. Are you happy now”
        “Whoah! You left her?”
“Yeah, is that so hard to believe?”
“Yeah, it is. You’ve been crazy about this chick for years”
“True”
        “So, what happened?”
“She lied”
        “About what?”
“Seeing her ex”
        “Did she sleep with him”
“Jeez, No!”
“Then what’s got your panties in a knot?”
“It’s just too much. Her mother hates me and he’s a jackass. But, they have a kid together.”
“So, you’re just going to let them win?”
“There’s nothing I can do about it”
        “How does she feel?”
“She says they’re out of her life, but that’s not realistic”
“I think she’s got more balls than three of you”
“Nice, rub it in, won’t you”
“Sorry, I think you need to talk to her.”
“I will. I just got to sort through some stuff first.”
        “Fine. Luke?”
“Yeah”
“It’s nice having you around again”
“Thanks”
        “You want some more beer?”
“Sure”
Daniel got up and went to the house to get some beer from the fridge.
------
Two days and twenty cups of coffee later, Lorelai was in Florida. She was in the Florida Keyes and it was gorgeous. The place was full of beautiful people and the crystal blue sea. She could see herself living here. It was so nice; so calm. The kind of place her mother would never go. How did that happen? How did the witch just pop into her head again. Lorelai pulled into the parking lot of a nearby hotel and tried to get a room.
“Hello”
        “Hi, how may help you”
“Room. I need a room”
        “Single, double?”
“Single”
        “How many nights”
“Three? No four. No, no wait, five. Yeah, make it five”
Lorelai could feel the coffee kicking in. She started to get babbly when she was on a caffeine high. But, she was always on a caffeine high.
“So, five nights?”
        “Yes”
“Name?”
        “Lorelai Gilmore”
“Mastercard or Visa?”
        “Visa, all the way baby”
The clerk smiled awkwardly at her as she took Lorelai’s credit card.
“You’re in Room 607. Welcome to the Avalon.”
“Thank you,” replied Lorelai as she took her room card and credit card from the clerk. She went back to the car to get her stuff and headed to her room. She jumped on the large bed and stretched her legs. She was exhausted, but she needed to see Luke before she got to comfortable. Lorelai dug out the piece of paper Jess had given in her and dialed the number.
“Hello”
        “Hi, is this Daniel O’brien?”
“Yeah”
“Do you have a friend named Luke Dane’s?”
“Maybe? Who is this?”
“Sorry, I’m Lorelai Gilmore. I’m looking for Luke. Is he there?”
“Yeah, hold on.”
“No! Don’t tell him I’m on the phone”
“Oh”
“I’m in town. I need to see him, but I’m afraid he won’t want to see me. How is he?”
“Well, I wish I could say the same”
“Yeah, Luke’s not much of a talker”
        “Can I have the address?”
“Sure, it’s 2450 Oakville Drive”
        “Thanks”
“No problem”
Daniel hung up the phone with a huge smile plastered across his face. The day was just about to get interesting.

Re: Are we overChapter 6: The Real Lorelai
Lorelai took her journals out of her duffel bag and placed them in a gift bag. There was only way to prove to Luke that she was ‘all in’
These journals revealed a part of her that she’d never shared with anyone; not even Rory. This was a huge step for Lorelai one that she never thought she’d ever make. But, she needed Luke more than her stubborn pride would let her admit. She was desperate; and desperate times called for desperate measures. Lorelai left the hotel and got in her car and headed toward her destiny.
----
Lorelai knew she had found the right place when se saw Luke’s truck parked outside. It still had the boat attached to the back. She got out of her jeep and ran her fingers along the edge of the old boat. She wondered if he would ever finish it. She took a deep breath and walked up to the front door. She was greeted by a tall man with short curly blonde hair.
“Hi,” said Lorelai.
        “Hello,” replied Daniel.
He took a second to admire the dark-haired beauty standing in front of him. She was the kind woman who could knock the wind out of a man. A part of him envied his friend. Lorelai noticed that Luke’s friend was checking her out. Normally she would be flattered, but somehow it just felt weird.
“Is he here?”
“You really know how to cut to the chase”
“Yeah, that’s me”
Lorelai walked into the house and admired the subtle décor. The floor was made from a gorgeous hardwood. The furniture was simple, but old. She could detect an antique from miles away.
        “He’s in the yard”
“Thanks, you have a lovely home”
“Thank you. The yard is just through the kitchen.”
“Oh”
Lorelai walked down the hall towards the kitchen. She saw him sitting on a lawn chair on the patio just behind the glass doors. He had a beer in one hand and a book in the other. She slowly opened the door and stood there watching him. He was wearing a pair of old jeans and a black t-shirt. Luke sensed someone looking at him. He looked up and found himself looking into Lorelai’s eyes. It couldn’t be. He must be having a dream.
“Lorelai?”
        “In the flesh”
“What, what are you doing here?”
“I should be asking you that,” Lorelai said angrily.
“What?”
        “How could you Luke?”
“You came here to fight with me. Unbelievable”
Luke stood up and looked down at Lorelai.
“What’s unbelievable is your leaving town. How could you move and not even tell me?”
“What? I didn’t move?”
“Ha! You never leave the diner for more than three days. You left Lane in charge for two weeks. What am I supposed to think?”
“You came to the diner?”
        “Yeah?”
“Why?”
        “I came to grovel”
“Grovel? You don’t grovel”
        “Well, maybe I should learn”
Luke noticed the bag in her hand.
“What’s that?”
        “It’s me”
“You?”
“Yeah, I brought you me. Not me in the flesh, but my thoughts. I brought you the Lorelai nobody knows. These books are me; the real me. Lorelai Gilmore: The good, bad, and ugly.”
“I don’t understand”
“There’s so much I wanted to tell you. I know you didn’t want to hear it, but I needed to tell you. Not because of what happened, but because I needed you to understand. You think you care about me more than I do about you. Well, these books are proof that isn’t true. I needed you to know how I really felt. So, here. Read me”
“I’m staying at the Hotel Avalon, room 607. Read this. I’ll be there for five days. If I don’t here from you then I’ll know how you feel.”
Lorelai turned around left the house. Luke just stood their watching her go. She came. She came all the way here to find him. He still couldn’t believe it. He looked down at the bag in his hand sat back down.
Daniel went out to the yard to find Luke. He was sitting there holding a colorful book in his hand.
“What’s that?”
        “Lorelai gave this to me”
“What is it?”
        “Apparently, it’s the real Lorelai”
“She gave you her diary”
        “diaries”
“Wow, that’s big. That kind of stuff is symbolic.”
        “Yeah, I know”
“I got to meet someone at the pier.”
        “Date?”
“Yeah”
        “Have fun”
“Don’t worry, I will”
------
Luke opened up the first of the journal and started to read.
[July 1992,
Hey diary. Its summer and it’s really hot here. This is the longest I’ve spent in one place. I like this town. I like the name—Star’s Hallow. It has a romantic ring to it. Rory seems to like it too. Rory and I even have a place of her own. It’s not much, but I’m going to make it real pretty. It used to be a potting shed, but there’s plenty of room for a stove and two beds. There’s even enough room for a TV and a small couch. I wish I could give her more, but it’s the best I can do. I’m going to be working as a maid in this inn. The boss is a really nice lady. I want to be a manager, here. I know it’s a crazy dream, but I’m a crazy girl. Sometimes I wonder if I made a mistake. But, I look at Rory and her pretty face and I know its going to be okay. I want her to be happy. I know money can’t give you that. But, I’m going to love her. Love is important because I know how much it sucks when your mommy doesn’t love you.
November 1992,
Today is a great day. It’s an umpa lumpa day. The Great Umpa in the sky is looking down on me with a great big smile. If I could choose my own God, it would be an umpa God. I would kneel at the alter of the Great Umpa. Mia is leaving and she’s asked me to be manager. I still can’t believe it. ME, Lorelai Gilmore, a manager. It’s like a dream. I can finally give Rory all the things she deserves. We found a great apartment above doose’s. It’s small, but it has two whole rooms, a kitchen, and a living room. This day started out so bad, but it must have been an Omen. The kitchen was low on coffee so I had to go on a coffee hunt. I saw the weirdest thing, the old hardware store had been turned into a diner. So, I went in begging for a cup of coffee. Maybe he knew. He looked up at me with those blue eyes. Those eyes should be illegal. I’d never seen him before, but I rarely leave the Inn. I kept bugging him for a coffee. I even gave him a fake horoscope in order to get some coffee. He gave in. The gorgeous diner man gave in. He was too young and hot to be working behind the counter of a diner. His coffee was like heaven. I’ve never had anything like it. His coffee and those eyes were just addictive.]
Luke put the book down and smiled to himself. He never knew that Lorelai thought of him like that. It was weird to read her thoughts. He always wondered what she thought about when she was scared and alone. It must have been so hard for her. He tried to help her as much as he could. Luke picked up the journal and continued reading.
[February 1998,
I did it. I finally did it. I bought it. I bought a house. It’s not much. It’s really old and the yard isn’t much, but its mine. All mine. It’s taken me years to save up for it. I have a garage and a kitchen, not that I need a kitchen because I don’t cook. The only thing I need is a coffee-maker, toaster, and a microwave. I practically live at Luke’s, so cooking is not necessary. Luke is great. I don’t think I could do this if it wasn’t for him. He’s so good with Rory. Teasing him is fun too. I just hate that he doesn’t smile. It’s my mission to weasel one smile out of him every time I see him. I can’t believe I have my own house.
October 2000
Weddings suck. That should be reason enough not to get married. I should be able to come up with something better. I keep looking at the Chuppah Luke built. He built me a Chuppah. God, he’s so great. I don’t want Max to live here. Does that make me evil. This is my space. I just don’t want him here. How can I marry him under that Chuppah when Luke made it for me? It’s like a betrayal. Would it be wrong to keep the Chuppah and not marry Max? It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. I’m supposed to be happy and excited. I picture myself next to Max and I just want to run. Do I love him? No, I know I don’t. So, maybe Luke was right. I shouldn’t settle. Why do I keep thinking about Luke? I should be thinking of Max, but I’m not. I have to tell him. I can’t marry him, it just wouldn’t be right. Not, when I’m thinking about someone else]
Luke put down the book and picked up another. She was thinking of him then. God, he was stupid. He should have made a move earlier. Why did he waste so much time? She wanted him from the very beginning and he never guessed.
[November 2002,
I hate her. She has red hair. Who dates women with red hair. No one. How could he date a red-head? I just can’t picture him with a red-head or even a lawyer. Ugh, Luke’s girlfriend is a red-headed lawyer. Why do I hate her so much? I don’t know. She just bugs me. She hangs all over him and I don’t like it. She keeps trying to change him and that’s wrong. Luke is fine just the way he is. He’s nice and sweet and too good for that witch. God, I have to stop obsessing about this. Rory thinks I’m dating a Luke replica. But, she’s wrong. Why would I do that? I don’t want Luke. Sure, he’s cute, but he’s my friend. Yeah, that’s it.
August 2003,
He got married. Luke got married. Oh, my God. I can’t believe he got married. I got Europe with Rory for a few months and he gets married. He got married on a boat. Wow, this is just too much. I can’t believe it. Why do I care? I just do. I know its there. It’s always been there. Luke wasn’t supposed to marry her. I’m sad. Why am I sad? Should I be sad that my best friend got married? I should have been there. I need chocolate to cheer me up.
November 2003,
He is sad. Luke is sad. I don’t like it when he’s sad. She broke his heart and I want to kill her. Nobody hurts Luke. Jason gave me his key and he called. Luke was in jail. God, I had to get to him. He looked so drained and sad sitting in that cell. He beat up her car. I hate that she made him like this. I knew there was a reason I didn’t like her. I bail him out of jail and he hugs me. This feels right. Nothing has felt this good before. Why didn’t I realize it before? It should be us. Why am I with Jason? He’s a loser. Maybe it’s just to piss everyone off. I want Luke, but he doesn’t want that. Right now, he needs me to take care of him. So, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to take care of him.]
Luke scratched his head in total disbelief. It was right there. She was all in even before he knew it. She always knew. God, he felt so stupid. No wonder she acted so crazy during the whole Nicole thing. Luke was dying to know more. He picked flipped the journal a couple of pages until he got to the test-run of the dragon-fly. He wanted to know what she was thinking when they were together.
[June 2004
He kissed me. Luke kissed me. I still can’t believe it. It was great. It was wonderful. But, then everything went wrong. Kirk came running down the steps naked. I got to erase that memory. I went home to find Rory. Oh, Rory. I still can’t believe what she did. I thought I’d raised her better than that. But, I’m not sterling example. Knocked-up at 16 and willful. Is that what I taught her? Did I teach Rory to break the rules and disrespect the sanctity of marriage? Oh, how could she do this? I’m so confused now. What do I say to her? I just lost it. I pulled the last mother card I had left. Now, I’m all out. I’ve tapped my mother potential. She hates me. Rory said she hates me. She’s never said that before. I feel so sad. How could such a good day go so wrong? At least I have the inn and Luke. I have Luke, don’t I? Maybe I don’t. Maybe I just dreamed that kiss. I hope it isn’t a dream because I want it to be true. I want Luke to want me.
August 2004
Luke has been gone for 7 weeks. He comes back tomorrow. I miss him. I like this new Luke. I like that he calls me everyday and tells me all about Maine. Relationship Luke is really great. God, I missed him.
September 2004
8 years. He’s wanted me 8 years. He said he was all in and I just sat there. I was thrown. I wanted to yell, me too. I’m not scared. I’ve wanted this for so long it’s hard to believe its happening. This is right. Luke and I are great. I like us together. We blend perfectly. He’s the best. He makes my insides go all mushy. He’s the best kisser; the best lover. He makes my heart burst. No one has ever made me feel like this. I want to tell him, but I’m afraid he’ll freak out and run away. I don’t want him to runaway.
Christmas 2004
Luke in a Santa hat is too cute. He’s my great big teddy bear. Rory is happy for us too. We’re like a family. This is the family she deserves. Why didn’t I see it before? Lorealai Danes. Lorelai Gilmore Danes. No, Lorealai Victoria Danes. Perfect, absolutely perfect.]
Luke closed the book. There was still more, but he read all that he needed to read. It was there in these pages. She loved him. She saw her future with him and he realized for the first time how blind he’d been. He’d always believed that he loved her more. How could he have doubted that she loved him? They’d never said it. He’d been waiting for her to leave. He should have known. She let him in like she never let anyone else in. Lorelai was in love with him and he’d thrown that away because he was jealous of Chris. Chris was Rory’s father, but she didn’t love him. Lorelai needed love and she never got it from anyone, but Rory. He had to let her know she had his love. This stupidity had to end now. Luke grabbed his coat and when he realized it was the middle of the night. He couldn’t go now. He’d have to wait until morning. First thing in the morning, he’d go to her.
Chapter 7
Author’s Note: I apologize for taking a slight detour from my major plot-line, but it all fits together like pieces of a puzzle.

Chapter 7: Not my Baby!
Lorelai woke up after a few hours of disturbed sleep and turned on the TV. Her nerves were killing her. What she did was huge. She opened up a part of herself that she’d never revealed before. It was scary waiting for his reaction.
“Can he love me for me,” Lorelai asked herself?
No one, but Rory ever had. This knowledge was strange. She hated to look deep inside of herself because she was afraid of what she might find. All the years of her mother second-guessing her every move had made an impact. She could live with their cold calculating ways; what she couldn’t live without was Luke. She needed his love and that was scary. She was playing a dangerous game of roulette with her heart. She was betting on his love. Lorelai flipped through the channels until she came across an old movie. Half-way through the movie she fell asleep.
Earlier that evening, Rory was at a floor party in her dorm. She rarely went to these stupid things, but she thought it was time to loosen up and meet new people. She couldn’t spend her whole college experience holed up in her room studying. She was standing in the corner of the room talking some moron from the rowing team.
The sight of the blonde from the other day caught her attention. She remembered her face clearly because she couldn’t block that image out. She could still see Logan with his arm draped across her shoulders. She noticed Finn walking up to said blonde and doing exactly what Logan had done a few days ago.
“These people are unbelievable,” Rory thought to herself. The guy she was standing next to her was saying something so she tried to focus on him.
“I’m sorry what did you say?”
“Do you want a drink?”
        “Sure”
“What’ll you have?”
“A rum and coke, my mom swears by it”
“I wish my mom was that cool”
“Well, we all can’t be so lucky”
Rory didn’t drink much, but this was a party. So, she thought she’d make an exception. The cute Rower came back with her drink which she downed in two quick swigs.
“thirsty?”
        “Yeah”
Rory felt the sting in her throat and waited for the drink to take effect. She just wanted to forget her problems. She wanted to forget about Logan and their stupid arrangement. Rory cold hardly believe she had come up with the dumb idea in the first place. It wasn’t like her. Logan was nice and cute, but he wasn’t worth the agony. Rory excused herself and headed over to a nearby coach. When she opened her eyes a few moments later, Finn was sitting next to her.
“Hey”
        Rory didn’t say anything”
“You okay?”
Rory just stared at him. She felt dizzy and she couldn’t feel a thing. Finn was getting panicky. It was obvious that Logan’s little friend drank something that didn’t agree with her. But, she wasn’t say anything.
“Come on”
Rory wanted to speak, but she couldn’t. She felt trapped. Finn picked her up and carried her over his shoulder.
Logan was climbing the stairs of Branford hall when he saw Finn carrying Rory.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
“I don’t know. She was on the coach. She won’t talk and her face is getting all puffy, mate?”
“What did she drink?”
“I don’t know. She was talking to some bloke who got her drink.”
Logan shook his head he had feeling that guys slipped her something.
“We got to get her to the hospital, now!”
        “What? Why?”
“I think maybe someone slipped her a roufie”
“Shiite? That’s bloody awful mate. What are we waiting for?”
Logan got into his car and sped towards the hospital.
Lorelai woke in the middle of the night with a chill. Something was wrong. She had a feeling that something bad was about to happen. She got up and splashed some water on her face. She didn’t know what it was, but it didn’t feel right. She took out her cell phone and checked her messages nothing.
“Maybe it’s Rory? Oh God, what if something happened to Rory,” Lorelai wondered to herself?
She speed dialed Rory’s cell and an unfamiliar voice picked up.
“Hello”
        “Who is this?”
“Finn”
        “I repeat, who are you?”
“I told you, Finn”
“I don’t know you. Where is Rory?”
“She’s indisposed right now”
“What do you mean she’s indisposed? I WANT TO SPEAK TO MY DAUGHTER RIGHT NOW!”
Finn held out the phone to Logan, “Some crazy chick claiming to be Rory’s mother is on the phone”
“Hello, Lorelai”
“Logan, where is Rory and who was that?”
“Don’t worry about Finn, he’s not to good with communicating”
        “Where is Rory?”
“She’s in the emergency room”
        “WHAT?”
“We found her at a dorm party. She couldn’t talk. We think someone slipped her something”
“OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD! NOT MY BABY. I’m in Florida I’ll be there as soon as possible. Which hospital are you at?”
“New Haven General”
Lorelai hung up the phone and called Luke at his friend’s house. She was hoping to just leave a message, but Luke picked up on the second ring.
“Lorelai?”
“Luke, I’m sorry to wake you. I was gonna leave a message.”
“What’s wrong? Have you been crying?”
        “It’s Rory….”
“what about Rory? Is she okay?”
        “No, she’s in the hospital”
“WHAT?”
“I have to go to her.”
“I’m coming with you. Can you drive?”
        “I don’t know. I’ll be there with a cab in half-hour”
Luke threw a bunch of stuff in a bag and left a not for Daniel. He hopped in the cab and Lorelai was waiting out front when they pulled into the hotel. She got in and just sat there wringing her hands.
“Hey, it’s going to be okay”
Lorelai started to cry again. She couldn’t get the words out. She was so scared. She didn’t know what she would if something bad happened to Rory. Luke moved closer to her and wrapped his arm around her.
“It’s okay, I’m here. We’ll get through this.”
Lorelai put her head on his chest and cried all the way to hospital.
Five hours later, Lorelai and Luke got off their flight from Florida. They were at JFK. Luke grabbed Lorelai’s hand and led her to the shuttle bus that would take them to the Train station. The whole way to New Haven Lorelai just sat there staring straight ahead. She wasn’t crying anymore, but she still couldn’t say anything. Luke just sat there holding her hand the whole way.
The two of them ran into the hospital as soon as their cab pulled up to the emergency room. Lorelai saw Logan sitting there with a tall dark-haired fellow.
“Logan, how is she?”
        “We don’t know”
“Where is she?”
Luke stood behind Lorelai with his hand resting on her shoulders as she spoke to Logan.
        “She’s with the doctor?”
Lorelai went up to the nurses desk.
“My daughter she came in last night. Can I see her? Where is she?”
“Okay, lady you need to chill. What’s her name?”
“Lorelai Gilmore III”
        “That’s a weird name for a girl?”
Lorelai slammed her hands on the counter and screamed, “just tell me where my daughter is”
“She’s in exam room 3, but you can’t go there”
        “Why, Why not?”
“They’re working on her. The doctor will be out to talk to you when they’re done.”
“THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I WANT TO SEE MY DAUGHTER NOW”
Luke came up behind Lorelai and tried to soothe her.
“Shh, you’ll see her. Let the doctors do their job”
“Luke, I’m scared. I can’t lose my baby”
“You won’t” he calmly replied.
They walked back into the waiting room and sat down next to Logan and Finn. Logan was a complete wreck. His hair was disheveled and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days.
“Why don’t you guys go home,” suggested Luke.
“No! I’m not going anywhere,” replied a distraught Logan.
“Come on mate, maybe we should leave them alone. You can come back in the morning,” said Finn.
        “No”
“You stay mate; I stay.”
Logan looked up at his oldest friend and whispered a muted, “Thank you”
Luke didn’t know much about these two boys, but he appreciated the way they were looking out for Rory. He was worried about her, but he needed to be strong for Lorelai. Rory was like a daughter to him and he would do anything, absolutely anything to protect her.
The four of them sat in the waiting for hours before the doctor came to talk to them.
“Mrs. Gilmore?”
“That’s me. Is she okay? How is my baby?”
“She’s going to be okay. Somebody gave her Rohypnol.”
        “What’s that?”
“It’s a date rape drug. She had a bad reaction. We pumped her stomach, but she should be fine.”
        “When can I see her.”
“Immediately, but only two at a time. We want to keep her overnight for observation though”
        “That’s fine”
“She’s on the fourth floor. Room 403”
        “Thank you, doctor”
The doctor smiled and walked down the hall. A huge smiled broke across Logan’s face
Luke walked up to him and grabbed him by the collar.
“What did you do to her?”
Logan could barely breathe. Finn stepped in and said, “Take it easy, mate. We found her like this. It was some Rowing git she was chatting with.”
“Git? What? Could you speak English”
Luke released the grip on Logan’s collar and tried to control the anger that was pulsating through his veins.
“We think someone slipped her something at the party. I was coming to see her when Finn brought her downstairs. She couldn’t talk; she kept looking at me like she was trying to tell me something.”
“Oh”
Luke looked down at the floor. He felt like a shit. He attacked this boy for no reason.
“Hey, I’m sorry for…”

“Attacking me. No problem, I’d probably do the same thing.”
“Well, I’m sorry”
        “We’re cool”
“Yeah”
Chapter 8
Author’s note: This chapter is really sappy. Short, but sappy. There will be more Gilmore Girls Fun to come……
Thanks for all the great reviews and the support.
Chapter 8: Gilmore Girls plus one
Luke lingered outside Rory’s as Lorelai went to see her. He didn’t know what to do. He wanted to go in there with her and see Rory for himself, but he decided to sit right outside the room for now. Lorelai walked up to Rory and sat on the edge of the bed. Rory pulled herself to a sitting position.
“Mom?”
        “Hey, hun”
“Mom, what are you doing here,” Rory said in a hoarse voice.
“Shh, don’t talk. You need to rest your voice”
Lorelai pushed the hair from her face and pulled her daughter into a fierce hug. She was relieved that her baby girl was okay. She had come so close to losing her. She hated that feeling. It was like her insides had frozen up. Where was Luke? He was behind her up until they got to the room. She knew he was standing outside the door drilling a whole in the floor with his pacing. She could hardly believe that he’d come with her.
“Mom, don’t cry”
        “I’m sorry, I can’t help it.”
“Where’s Luke,” whispered Rory.
        “Hiding outside your room”
“Could you tell him to come in?”
        “Sure”
Lorelai got up went out into the hall to find Luke. He was walking down the hall carrying two Styrofoam cups.
“What’s this?”
“Coffee for you; tea for me”
“You’re so sweet. She wants to see you.”
        “She does?”
“Yeah, she does”
Lorelai took the drinks from Luke and motioned towards Rory’s room.
“Go ahead, she doesn’t bite”
“I don’t know what to say”
“You’ll figure it out”
Luke wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans and slowly opened the door. He snuck his head and saw her sitting up in bed. She looked so pale and weak. This was not the Rory he was used to. She looked lifeless and drained. Luke finally walked into the room and stood at the foot of her beds.
“Hey, Luke”
        “Hey, kiddo”
“Why are you standing all the way there?”
        “I don’t know”
“You can come closer, I’m not contagious or anything.”
Luke took the chair in the corner and moved it closer to Rory’s bed and took a seat.
“I’m not really sure what to say”
“It’s okay, I’m just glad you’re here”
        “Maybe you shouldn’t talk”
“I’m glad I can”
“You’ve had a rough night, kid”
“Yeah, too bad I don’t remember much”
        “Not even a little”
“I remember going to that party and talking to some boring athlete”
Luke just grunted in response. He knew that the ‘boring athlete’ was the reason she was lying in this hospital bed.
“So, you came back to see me”
“Yeah, well somebody had to keep your mother from falling apart.”
        “You always do that”
“Do what?”

“Take care of us and then act like it was no big deal”
“I do?”
        “Yeah, you do”
Rory reached out her hand and Luke covered it was his own. This girl was so precious; so sweet. She didn’t deserve to be lying here.
“Listen, is everything cool with you and mom?”
“Not yet, but it will be”
“That’s good”
        “I should let you rest”
“Luke, don’t go. Stay here. I want you and mom to sit here with me. You’re family; you know that don’t you?”
        “I am?”
“Yeah, you are. I used to wish that you were my Dad.”
That last statement caught him off-guard. A big lump was forming in his throat. He could feel his eyes beginning to water.
‘Get a grip, man’ he thought to himself.
        “Thank you”
Lorelai walked back into the room and saw Luke sitting with Rory. He was holding her hand. The sight of the two people she loved most holding hands, tugged at her heart. This is the way it should have been. But, she didn’t want to jump the gun. Luke was just being Luke. She didn’t know how he felt. Officially, they were still broken up. She walked over to the other side of the bed and poured some ice-water in a glass for Rory. She handed it to her and smiled.
“Hey, hun”
Luke across at Lorelai and smiled. He was just glad that Rory was okay.
“Maybe I should go”
“No, Luke don’t go. You belong here,” said Lorelai.
She reached over and reached for his hand. The three of them sat there holding hands. They were the Gilmore Girls plus one; a really special one.

Author’s Note: I know I surprised everyone with my little plot twist, but there is a method to my madness. Please be patient, the LL loving is on the way.
Chapter 9: Informing the Gilmore’s
Logan and Finn were sitting outside of Rory’s hospital room. Logan kept wringing his hands and wondering what he should do next. This whole night definitely fell outside the rules of ‘just having fun’
“Hey, mate. What’s on your mind?”
        “Maybe I shouldn’t see her”
“Bullocks, mate. You want to see her; then see her.”
“I don’t know, this whole thing between us with supposed to be casual. This definitely falls outside the parameters of casual.”
“Are you bloody kidding me? The girl nearly got raped tonight and you’re debating the merits of seeing her.”
Logan looked at his friend in shock. He was taken aback by his sudden surge of kindness for a girl he didn’t even know. He knew that Finn was a good guy, he just didn’t show it most of the time.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Logan hesitated for second before asking, “Will you come with me?”
Finn just smiled his trademark smile, “you need a babysitter?”
“No, it’s just that she probably doesn’t know I was there”
“Ahh,” Finn said with a sarcastic tone to his voice.
Logan glared at his friend and decided to take the chance and walked into the room. He walked in on what seemed like a very private family moment. Rory sat there with Luke and her mother each holding her hand. This was defiantly outside his comfort zone. Logan did not handle family moments well. He tried to avoid them as often as possible.
“Logan? What are you doing here?”
Lorelai noticed the angry look on her daughters face and decided that she needed to fill in some very necessary details.
“Logan it seems was your night in shining armor. Your gallant hero; your prince formerly known as ugly green toad.”
“What are you babbling about, mom?”
“Actually, that apt description best suits Finn. He was the one who detected that something was wrong”
Rory swung her head from her mother to Logan in utter confusion. She still wasn’t sure how she had gotten herself here, but she had feeling it was about to get interesting.
“would somebody just tell me what happened?”
Lorelai looked over at Logan and said, “I think you should do the honors, Sir”
“I fear it is a sad tale of the evil nature of man”
Luke looked at this boy with utter confusion, “Do you always talk like that?”
“Sometimes”
This one seemed as nutty as Lorelai and Rory. He had convinced himself it was an affliction only known to female gender, but this kid seemed to have proved him wrong.
Logan moved closer to Rory and took a seat at the foot of her bed.
“Well, do you remember the floor party in your dorm?”
        “Yes, most of it”
“Well, according to Finn, you were talking to a fellow.”
        “Yes, the boring rower”
“Well, this rower offered you a drink, did he not?”
        “Yes, he did’
“Well, it seemed he laced your drink with a ruffie in the attempt to worm his way into your bed.”
Luke squirmed at this last statement. He clenched his fist and tried to reign in the anger that was pumping through his veins.
“What’s this guys name? Do you know him? The stupid bastard is going to wish he….”
“Down boy,” said Lorelai.
She knew what he was thinking. Luke was so kind hearted and she knew how this was tearing him up inside.
“Someone gave me a ruffie,” asked Rory. All the color seemed to have drained from her face as the horror of what might have happened finally hit her.
“You escaped the said man’s company and took a seat on a coach. That is where Finn found you. He tried to engage you in company, but you did not reply. Finn using his great intellect deduced that something was wrong. So, he carried you out of the party which is when I happened upon you. We rushed you to this place and here you are.”
        “Oh”
Luke was so relieved that nothing else had happened to Rory. She was lucky to have friends like these. They might seem like selfish, uncaring brats, but they really were good kids.
“I’m just glad you’re okay, Ace”
        “Thank you”
“All in a days work”
        “Where’s Finn?”
“Outside”
“Could you tell him to come in?”
“Wait, I’ll do it. I have to make a call anyway,” said Lorelai.
Lorelai left the room and found Finn sitting just outside the room with a blank expression on his face.
“Hey”
        “Hello”
“So, the lady wants to see her hero”
        “I’m no hero”
“Oh, from the sounds of it you saved the day”
Finn stood up and walked into the room. Lorelai sped towards the other end of the hall and found the nearest pay phone. She dialed quickly so she wouldn’t change her mind.
“Richard Gilmore, Speaking”
        “Um, Dad”
“Lorelai?”
        “Yeah”
“How are you?”
“I’m okay. It’s Rory she’s in the hospital.”
“What? When? Which hospital are you at?”
        “Last night, New Haven General.”
“Why didn’t you call last night?”
“I just found out this morning. She had a reaction to something, but the doctors say she will be okay; they just want to run some more tests. I just thought you would want to know.”
“Of course, thank you. Lorelai?”
“Yes, do you.. do you want us to be there?”
Lorelai didn’t know what to say. This was the most emotion her father had expressed to her in years, but she didn’t want to see her mother.
“I’d like to see you, but I’m not ready to see mom.”
        “I see”
“But, I’m sure Rory would like to see you both”
“Okay, what room is she in?”
“Room 403”
        “Lorelai?”
“Thank you”
She didn’t say anything. It was weird to hear her father thanking her for something so simple. As angry as she was with her mother, she didn’t want to deprive Rory of a connection with her grandmother.

Author’s Note: I started this story wanting to get L/L back together in my own way. The story has involved into its own creature. I wanted to thank everyone for the reviews. I wanted to delve into the relationship between Luke and Rory. That is why I chose the accident as a plot sequence. As for the L/L relationship there are still many issues that they need to deal with. I just think there is so much to work with here. ASP is a true genius. I’m just borrowing her great characters for a bit…..
Chapter 10: Rory comes first……
Lorelai hung up the phone and took a deep breath. She didn’t know if she did the right thing, but it was done now. In a little over an hour her parents would come barreling through those hospital doors and she’d have to deal with them for the first time in weeks. She was still so angry at her mother. It was more than being angry. She thought she could fix things with her mother. But, Emily Gilmore proved once again trusting her was a mistake. Lorelai took a seat in the waiting room and pulled her knees up to her chest. She needed time to process everything before they got here. Things had happened so fast. A few hours ago, she wasn’t sure what had happened to her baby. She was okay for now, but she just wanted Rory to feel safe. Lorelai closed her eyes and tried to think good thoughts, but they just weren’t coming to her. All she could focus on was the fact that she’d have to deal with her mother in a little while.
Luke came up to Lorelai and took a seat next to her.
“Hi”
Lorelai looked up and smiled, “hey”
“What are you doing out here?”
        “Thinking”
“Ahh”
“Luke, I’m sorry. I promised you and I promised myself I wouldn’t do this. I was just so scared when I heard that Rory was in the hospital. I didn’t want you to think that I was running away again. I had to let you know. I didn’t expect for you to come with me. I hate that I keep making you drop things for me.”
“Whoah, first take a breath. Second, this is about Rory. I love that kid. She’s like nothing I can describe. I would walk through fire for her. We can talk about us later, but now is about Rory.”
“I guess you’re right,” replied Lorelai. She took a moment before speaking again,
“I called my parents”
Luke just looked at her in surprise. He hadn’t expected her to do that. He was glad she had. Lorelai needed to work through this thing with her parents.
“Maybe I shouldn’t be here when they come”
“No, stay.”
“I just don’t want to deal with all that”
“I don’t want you to go. It’s like you said this is about Rory and she wants you here.”
Luke drew in a deep breath before saying anything further.
“Thanks that means more to me than you can know, but I’m not sure I’m up to dealing with them.”
“You could always hide out in the cafeteria for a while”
Luke didn’t say anything. He just smiled at her and squeezed her shoulder as he headed down the hall. Lorelai watched him walk away and realized that he was probably right. She couldn’t blame him for not wanting to deal with her parents especially with her mother. They had made their dislike of him blatantly obvious. Nobody would want to deal with that type of hostility unless they had no other choice. She took a deep breath and prepared herself for battle.
-----
Lorelai was sitting on the edge of Rory’s hospital bed reading her the funny bits from Newsweek. She always loved reading the funny quotes at the beginning of the magazine.
“Read that one again, Mom”
“No! I’ve had enough Bush jokes for the day”
“Aww, you’re no fun”
“Sorry, I’m all funned out for the day”
“That’s not a word”
        “Yes, it is”
“I don’t believe you”
“It is. I looked it up in the Lorelai Dictionary”
Rory smiled awkwardly at her mother and played with the edges of the blanket. She needed to explain, but for the first time in her life talking to her mom was hard. Rory knew it had a lot to do with the Dean situation.
“Mom?”
        “Yeah”
“I feel…”
“Hey, what is it? Why are you crying?”
“I just feel so lost”
Lorelai put the magazine down and moved closer to her daughter. She took her into her arms and held her. She could feel the tears on her shoulder as Rory slowly cried. She didn’t know if it had to do with the creep and the ruffie or if it was something more. Lorelai had a feeling this was about more than what had happened the other tonight.
----
As Lorelai and Rory shared another one of their mother-daughter moments, Emily and Richard were hovering in the hall looking for her room.
“What room did she say?”
        “I think it was 404?”
“Didn’t you write it down Richard?”
        “No”
“Well, why not? This is the kind of thing you should note on a piece of paper,” screamed Emily.
“Emily, you need to relax. We will find the room”
“Lorelai said she was going to be fine. So, I’m sure all will be well”
“At least she’s speaking to you?”
“Well”
“Don’t. Don’t rub it in again.”
“I was not rubbing anything.”
Emily lifted her head haughtily and marched towards the nurse’s station.
“Excuse me”
        “Yes?”
“I’m looking for my grand-daughter”
        “Name?”
“Gilmore, Lorelai”
        “Room 403”
Emily walked away without uttering a word of thank you as the bewildered nurse watched her march towards Rory’s room. When Emily opened the door, Rory and Lorelai were hugging. Her daughter was sitting their comforting her granddaughter and all Emily could feel was the wrenching pain in her chest. She’d always envied their relationship. She wished she could be that way with Lorelai, but it wasn’t in her.
“Rory dear, are you okay?”
        “Grandma, you’re here?”
“Yes, I am. Your mother called”
Rory looked over at her mother in amazement.
        “You called grandma?”
“Grandpa, actually,” retorted Lorelai.
Emily looked at her daughter and attempted to speak, but was cut off by Lorelai.
“Don’t bother, mother. I’ll leave you two alone”
        “Lorelai, don’t be ridiculous”
“Trust me; this is me being anything but ridiculous.”
Lorelai left the hospital room and walked down the hall where she happened upon her father fidgeting with the coffee machine.
“Need some help?”
        “Lorelai”
“Hi, dad”
“How is she? She’s pretty good. She gave me a scare.”
“What happened exactly?”
“She had a reaction to something”
“Oh”
“You should go talk to her”
“Have you spoken to your mother?”
        “Sort of”
“What does sort of mean? Either you spoke to her or you didn’t”
“Dad, I didn’t call you so that we could have a happy family reunion. I just thought you would want to know that something happened to Rory. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get some fresh air.”
Richard watched his only daughter walk away once again. He was overcome with the urge to make a change; to let her know how he was feeling, but he didn’t. It just wasn’t proper. Things would work out in the end.

Author's Note: This is all I have so far. Suffering from a bit of a block in this story. So, any suggestions would be welcome....
