Agouti pattern in my rabbits? I have bred a chocolate buck to a broken red doe (both Rex breed). The solid offspring (2 kits) that resulted were fawn or tan in color with slight red tipping along the top. Their under-fur color is slate gray. Belly color is a whitish cream. Underside of the tail is white. Eye circles are a light fawn and some light fawn or white is noticeable around the edges of the ears. Would a self fawn or tan (aa genotype) not have the slate gray under-fur? Does the gray under-fur and other descriptions indicate the agouti (A_) gene is present in the doe? Note: the broken red doe has light colored eye circles, the red in her saddle lightens as it moves towards the belly, the underside of her tail is white and there is some black/brown ticking on the hairs only on the top of her tail. The doe has no gray underfur but rather yellow as you would expect in a true red. Is the gray under-fur in the self kits the result of the agouti or some other gene? Are they really sooty fawns/tans? The other kits (5) are colored as follows: 2 broken chocolates (chocolate color is lighter than that of the buck), 1 broken black, 1 broken red (lighter red than the doe), and 1 broken fawn or tan (pattern of colored area has the gray under-fur as above). The kits are 5 weeks old and this is the first litter. Would the following be an accurate assesment of the parents genotype based on the above description of the offspring (En and en represent the broken gene): Chocolate buck: aa bb C_ D_ E_ enen (he is hersey chocolate in color with a grayish-brown underfur) Broken red doe: A_ B_ C_ D_ ee Enen (once again the light eye circles and white under tail lead me to believe she carries the Agouti gene but that it is masked by some other gene; her colored areas are deep red in color with yellow underfur and no evidence of dark colored hair execpt for a few dark hairs on the top-side of the tail) Please resond to dgallow@comp.uark.edu |
